Leap Frog is certainly one of the world’s most famous and trustworthy brands in the field of educational games. Leap Frog specializes in making fantastic toys for young children. Leap Frog’s toys are geared towards providing children with education. These types of toys are crucial towards encouraging the child to learn. Leap Frog thus makes learning fun while providing an engaging the kids in a useful activity. Let us take an overview of some of the Leap Frog toys on the market.
1. LeapFrog Learn & Groove™ Musical Table
We were first introduced to this toy at our pediatrician’s waiting room. My young kid was immediately drawn to its numerous buttons and detachable parts. We ended up buying it, and we have to say that we are really satisfied. This game gives so much to do that the child is never bored. It has a little open-able compartment that is designed to improve the child’s ability to manipulate objects. Blocks and balls were placed inside which our kid would then happily take out and put back in. This is the first toy he looks for when he wakes up. It usually keeps him occupied with its different activities and music for over half an hour before he seeks out other toys.
2. LeapFrog® Tag Reading System
I first came across this invention through an interview of its inventor in the Wired Magazine. It got me curious, so I bought it. It’s quite an invention, I must say, even in today’s advanced age. Basically the Tag Reading System is a camera that identifies words and pictures that have been printed on special paper (i.e. the set of books that you buy and that goes with the camera). There is a light pen attached to the camera. When the identification phase is finished, your child will pass the pen over each word or image in the text. The camera will play sound bites or read the word as the pen passes over them. With its intuitive design, the child easily understands how to manipulate the different functions of the Tag Reading System.
In the first instance, the child will simply try to hear out the sound bites by touching the pen randomly over every image and word. But soon enough, he will begin to investigate the less apparent elements like read back and games. The children soon become captivated by it. It is a great alternative to the DVD on long excursions by car. I am quite certain of the educational bonus that this game brings to my child. The books are of differing quality, and I am quite busy writing reviews for most of them
. Sponge Bob is one of my favorites followed by Kung Fu Panda or Carz.
A final word to say that this is a really cool invention. Parents will find that it’s a great substitute to TV. However, one must not neglect quality reading time also. It is nevertheless a good investment.
3. LeapFrog® Leapster® 2 Learning Game System
This is one our favourite Leap Frog toys, it’s worth reading our full Leap Frog Leapster review.
4. Sassy LeapFrog Baby Curious Crab Rattle
I purchased this as a baby shower gift and it was really appreciated. It is very attractive as it has brilliant colors. The claws of the crab have little beads that rattle profusely when shaken. The mouth is easily handled by the child. Along the bottom of the crab are small tabs in various colors with the names of the color written on them. These tabs also make noise when the baby handles them. A good toy for very young babies.
5. LeapFrog® Leapster® Learning Game: Scholastic Math Missions
My five year old son received his Leapster last November. I gave him many cartridges which are all fine. However, the Math Missions game, which we downloaded online, really captivated him in a manner which the other games could not. Most other games try to make learning a fun event. But this game really achieves this objective remarkably well. For example, rather than making him to solve 4+5, it gives him three fish, weighing 4, 5 and 9 pounds each. Now, he has to determine how to put them on a scale so that it balances. For a young child, this enigma is more interesting. He really begins to understand the concept of an equation. A second activity, similar to the game Mastermind, he has to find the right sequence of candies to put in a box. A bit of trial and error and some logical analysis sees him through this ordeal. The child develops his ability to think logically with this nicely conceived game.
The game motivates the kids by providing arcade games that are more fun to play. However, to access these games, one has to pay money which is earned by resolving the maths puzzles. My child is willing to do all the maths puzzles so as to be able to play the games. These games are not very complex, suitable for young children aged 5-7 years (it is similar to games such as Pac man). This is a wonderful game. I hope more of its kind is developed by Scholastic for the Leap Frog platform.
6. LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set
My 16 month old baby enjoyed playing with the magnets that we put on the fridge so I bought this toy for him. There are five animals in this set, each divided in two parts (head and tail). The nice thing about this toy is that it acknowledges when a match has been made. However, if the child is unable to make the match, the game invents a name for the animal that the child has crafted (for example a sheep-cow). The game considers the mismatch as silly rather than making it sound as a mistake. This is good for young children who get upset quickly. The sounds are crystal clear and the pieces are very easy to handle. I recommend this to every parent with young children.
