Swimming Pool Pumps

by admin on July 9, 2009

Next to the pool itself, the pump is the most important piece of equipment in terms of ensuring you a fun summer of enjoying your pool. The pump powers the pool’s circulation system and filters the water clean. It is important to do some research before investing, because a good pump can make for a great summer, while a bad one can make for a ruined summer.

There are three basic kinds of filters: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters.

Sand filters filter water using sand. Water goes through the diffuser, then down through the bed of sand, trapping the dirt and debris within the sand. When the water gets to the bottom of the filter, it is returned to the pool. Sand filters clean out particles as small as 40 micrometers in size.

Cartridge filters use a filter made of a fiber similar to paper. They work about as well as sand filtration. Some people think that cartridge filters are a nuisance, but newer cartridges only have to be cleaned one or two times a year.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters use diatomaceous earth to filter the water. The filter has plastic grids covered with a special fabric. The grids are covered with DE which does the filtering. Diatomaceous earth filters out very small particles – as small as 5 to 8 microns.

Solar powered pump systems are available to both pump and heat the pool water using sunlight as the energy source. Though the heating may be slow, and won’t be dramatic, the huge amount of water is itself a good thermal storage system.

Other type of pumps include self-priming pumps, which are more often used for in-ground pools than above ground pools, flooded suction pumps for above ground pools, and booster pumps, which help self-priming pumps.

Proper, regular maintenance of swimming pool pumps is essential to keep your pool clean and healthy.
