Swimming Pool Maintenance

by admin on July 6, 2009

Keeping your pool in top shape so your family can enjoy it for years to come is a matter of regular maintenance that can prevent many problems for only the cost of some of your time and attention. Taking care of the tasks involved in having an inviting oasis in your backyard means different things depending on whether you’re opening your pool for the summer, maintaining it during swim season, or closing it for the winter.

Opening your pool for summer can involve calling a pool service to come take care of preseason maintenance or doing it yourself. This will involve removing and storing the pool cover, changing the filter if you didn’t do it at the end of the season last year, starting the filter system up, checking for leaks, removing debris and algae and testing the water before treating it.

During the summer, a surface skimmer can do a good job of keeping debris out if you use it regularly. You also need to check the skimmer for the pump and filter system regularly to keep it from being blocked with debris. Filters should be changed promptly when they need it, and the chemical balance in the pool should be checked every two days or more often.

At the end of swimming season, clean your pool thoroughly. Balance the chemicals in the water or buy a prepared winterizing kit and follow the instructions on it. Drain your pool to 6 inches below the skimmer and return pump lines. Above ground pool equipment should be drained and stored inside over the winter. Use a skimmer protector to protect your skimmer from ice damage. Use special winterizing plugs to keep plumbing lines from filling up with water and freezing. Remove ladders and drain the automatic pool cleaner. Store hoses un-kinked where they will not freeze.

It sounds like a lot, and it is, but if you maintain your pool properly, you will enjoy your pool for many more years and avoid expensive repairs.
