Inflatable water toys run the gamut from infant swim rings fitted with a sling bottom and leg openings to floating trampolines that will make your teenager flip (literally).

Before buying any inflatable water toys to take to public pools, find out what restrictions they have. There are some public pools that only allow small inflatable toys, and some that don’t allow inflatable water toys at all.

Once you know what size pool and what size children you’re buying them for, here are a few suggestions to help you select the best inflatable water toys. The first thing to keep in mind is that all children must be under adult supervision at all times when they are in the water.

For infants, there are now floating seats that have canopies over the top to keep your baby from getting sunburned. Some of these infant seats are shaped like little chaise lounges, and you will probably wish they made them in adult sizes.

Young children, say under 6 or 7, may be perfectly happy with the simplest of inflatable water toys. A few inflatable rings and a small inflatable boat may be enough to keep them happy for hours.

Once children reach the early to mid elementary school years, they’re usually ready for something beyond the basics. There are fairly realistic looking inflatable whales and sharks that children can ride on, and a medium sized inflatable boat is usually quite popular for school age children. At this age, they are old enough to enjoy inflatable water slides. Some inflatable water slides attach to the side of the pool, and some are made to be completely inside the pool. These are a great way to cool off on a hot day.

While the occasional novelty inflatable water toy can be the highlight of a vacation, keep in mind that children can often have the most fun with the simplest of inflatable water toys. Innertubes and similar inflatable water toys have been around for so long because their simple design lets children imagine numerous ways to use them.
