Having a baby is a long term commitment. Adopting a dog or a cat is a long term commitment. Buying an above ground swimming pool is a long term commitment too, so research the idea thoroughly before deciding if an above ground pool is right for you.

Of course, the first question to ask is, “Will we use it?” If you ask your school aged children, they’ll be very excited, and you and your significant other might be too. But also ask yourself: Who is going to keep it clean? Can everyone in the family access the pool easily with the ladder? Do we have the time to supervise the children each and every time they use it?

You also need to consider the setting in terms of shade and direction of the sunlight, particularly if you plan to use a solar pool heater. Will there be times of day when the sun or lack thereof will prevent use? If so, maybe another site would be better.

Are you prepared for the responsibilities of having a pool with young children in the household? A security fence is mandatory, but not enough. Kids can climb fences easier than you can. You have to make safety your first priority.

If you decide to take the plunge, so to speak, the next thing to consider is size and shape. Above ground pools can be rectangular, round, or oval, so take the shape of your yard into account and measure to make sure of the size your yard can accommodate. You must also decide if you will hire someone to install the pool or if you have the wherewithal to do it yourself. That’s a major decision.

If you decide to install an above ground pool, you must first make sure that you and your family are perfectly clear on the rules about who uses it and when, and how to maintain it safely.
