Before you buy all the fun swimming pool equipment like floats, basketball goals or other pool toys, it is important that you check all the necessary pool equipment to see if any of it needs repair or replacement after being “closed” for the winter. Here are some basic types of pool equipment and their uses.
Swimming pool covers come in three basic types: winter covers; safety covers; and solar covers. Winter covers are designed to keep debris out of the pool in the winter and to minimize water evaporation. Safety covers are designed to keep children and animals from accidentally falling into the water. They are tightly fastened on the sides so nobody can slip beneath it into the pool. Solar covers heat the water using the sun’s energy. They are made of synthetic polyethylene that traps the sun’s rays similar to how a greenhouse works.
The type of pool cleaner you get depends partly on your budget, and partly on what exactly you need to clean out of the pool. Automatic pressure side cleaners work great for pools that tend to catch a lot of leaves. Suction side cleaners work best in environments in which larger debris, like leaves, rarely falls into the pool. Robotic cleaners vacuum, and scrub the walls and the tile line. They are extremely convenient, but don’t handle large debris well and are expensive.
You need equipment to monitor the cleanliness of pool water, its pH, calcium hardness, and dissolved solids to keep your pool working safely. Disinfecting agents get rid of pathogens. Calcium hypochlorite and sodium hypochlorite are two examples of disinfecting agents. Maintaining proper pH is vital to the chlorine working correctly and to keeping pool water from irritating skin. A typical pool test kit tests pH, chlorine, total alkalinity, mineral content, and other chemical levels. Ideally pool water should be tested every day, but in many cases 2 to 3 times a week minimum will suffice.
