When I was a kid, a plastic kiddie pool was just a plastic kiddie pool and we were just grateful to have one. Whether it was filled with a hose, or rainwater, or a combination of both (with plenty of leaves in the water) it was the thing to play in during summer. One time I even sat right down in some rather dirty rainwater, but luckily was soon evacuated to higher ground by Mom.
Now that I am a grown up person, a plastic kiddie pool means a whole lot of things to me. I have a kiddie pool for my own kids, and they’re just as enthusiastic about playing in it as I was. A plastic kiddie pool can mean so many things for an imaginative child!
The kids in the back yard dancing in the shallow water amid the bouncing bumblebees. I can still hear snippets of the songs that would come on the AM radio. An MP3 player is nice, but not quite the same as doing it old-school.
Plastic kiddie pools come in a variety of sizes today. You can actually still buy the stereotypical plastic kiddie pool like parents grew up with but there are also giant inflatable pools with water slides which look like tons of fun, as long as you don’t pay too much attention to your summer water bill. Kiddie pools come in many more shapes than “round,” too.
Few things are as welcome to a harried parent with bored kids in the summer as a splashy play place right outside their back door. For the cost of some water and the time of making a few snacks you can have the little ones occupied for an entire morning in physical play outdoors. Which makes them extra tired when it’s time for a nap.
