Lego Star Wars Sandcrawler

This is one big Lego kit, with over 1600 pieces. This ramshackle land ark seems appropriately sprinkled with multicolored bricks to bring a homey charm the 15 inch tall brown monstrosity. It’s like a super-sized van with a crane and a middle section which neatly pops out.

The LEGO Star Wars Sandcrawler is somewhat limited in its distribution, so if you see one just buy it.  You really get a whole little village of people with this one. Eleven minifigures come with every set. You get Uncle Owen Lars, three Jawas, R2-D2, C-3PO, R5-D4, R1-G4, ASP droid, Gonk droid and a Treadwell droid.  You’ve got enough figures there to put on a nice Shakespearean drama, either live or filming them in glorious stop motion.

One fine idea is to get a digital camera and set it somewhere still and secure and aim it at the building spot. Have your friend take a picture each time you put a block on. That’ll make a nice addition to You-Tube.  But if you’re a geek like me, you’ll probably have some scary United Nations type meeting where no one can understand anyone without their own interpreter. In this set you could have 11 different heads of state plotting intrigue against each other for the mining rights of half the galaxy in a high energy, winner-take-all political thrill ride.

Or imagine recreating one of the foundational stories of Western culture. All you have to do is roll up to your enemy’s enormous brick space dome and tell them you’re very sorry for bothering them and you’d like to give them your Sandcrawler as a gesture of apology. Better yet, put those words in a note and wait till nighttime to pin it to the hatch on the outside of the Sandcrawler. In the morning it’ll be discovered and taken into the dome. Good thing all the minifigures are inside the Sandcrawler waiting to jump out and take over. You know, like that huge wheeled horse in the Trojan War that Homer dude wrote about that was recreated in every cartoon you ever saw. Yeah, just like that!
