The story of the creators of Curious George, Hans August (HA) and Margret Rey is as harrowing as any tale of Curious George. They were both born in Hamburg, Germany and after marrying moved to Paris, France. It was the late 1930s, early 1940s. The Nazis were taking control of many European cities. The Reys, both German Jews) escaped from Paris just four hours before the Nazis began their takeover of Paris. For four days, the Rey bicycled until they reach the French-Spanish border. They subsequently moved to the United States. Their love for animals and their talents lead to a new life creating children’s book. Curious George was a series of books that the Reys collaborated on. HA Rey drew the illustrations while Margret authored the stories.
