Would’ve like something more about the stonefish, because quite some people step on them every year and the pain is known to be one of the worst in the world.

  2. Exixx

Nice list, but a little wrong, at least one one of the items. I have ingested 4 oz of jimsonweed seeds with no ill effects. I tripped for three days, but no lasting ill effects.

  3. Nuno Lagoa

OMG! I know so many of these herbs and plants! Just the other day I was looking at a gorgeous yew tree thinking how odd its fruits looked! I never imagined it and others could be so deadly!

  4. In No. 4 your picture is of Solanum dulcamara not Atropa belladonna.

Also, castor beans are very strongly emetic which means most people eating them will vomit them up. Over history, researchers have found that less than 2% of people eating castor beans died. They estimate that improvements in medical procedures would bring that down to about 0.4% today.

  5. Kevin the Cynic

Pity they didn’t do a little more research. No mention is made of the habitat of the blue-ringed octopus and nothing else is mentioned about some of the other venomous animals from Australasia such as the taipan, the krait and the komodo dragon that are just as dangerous if not more so, than the cobra. No mention either of hydroflouric acid.

  6. nana

    what about alcohol?

  7. anon

Decent list, But its silly you would put Castor Bean’s on here instead of ricin the deadly extract of the bean. 500 micrograms (about half a grain of sand) for the lethal dose of ricin in humans, Ricin is poisonous if inhaled, injected, or ingested, no known antidote. The toxicity of raw castor beans due to the presence of ricin is well-known. Although the lethal dose in adults is considered to be 4 to 8 seeds, reports of actual poisoning are relatively rare.

  8. DR Clarke

You forgot Plutonium, and the venom of the Banded Krait.
Plutonium poisoning is almost always fatal, and the
Banded Krait is 7-14 times more potent than a Cobra.

  9. ‘reports of actual poisoning are relatively rare.’

As they are for ricin itself. I haven’t found a case since 1978 where ricin was successfully used as a murder weapon.

Prof John Henry ‘diffused tabloid hysteria about the planned ricin attack on the London underground by pointing out that London commuters could in fact swim in ricin without suffering any harm – it was only fatal if injected into the bloodstream’ (from his obituary in the Hampstead and Highgate Times).

  10. Anonymous

    “Cobras are vipers” WTF!?

  11. Molly

Where’s the cone fish venom? That’ll drop you like a stone.

  12. Plutonium failed to make the list. It is considered to be the most poisonous substance known to humankind.

  13. David

I’m confused by the story in the nicotine entry. The woman’s sister never drank the poisoned water but died anyway? I can’t imagine sleeping next to a glass of water that has had cigarettes filtered through it would poison somebody.

  14. @ Exixx:

Dude. It says “can.” That means it doesn’t always kill you. Huffing paint gives you a high, and it CAN kill you on the first time. It doesn’t mean it will, it just means that most sane people wouldn’t take the chance on eating those berries or getting that high.

  15. Antinous

    That would be atROpa belladonna.

  16. This is amazing article.Even I don’t know that some substance from this list is dangerous before reading this article. Thanks for giving it’s symptoms and effects.

  17. Calli Arcale

Rhubarb leaves are described as a “digestive irritant” — if this were true, rhubarb wouldn’t be as dangerous as it is. It’s way more than an irritant. The poisonous substance is oxalic acid, which happens to be one of the rare chelating agents which can be absorbed by the gut. (EDTA, a very common chelating agent often included in shampoo and soap to combat hard water, is not absorbed, making it perfectly safe for topical applications.) Oxalic acid will leach metals out of your blood, with a particular affinity for calcium. In low doses, this will lead to kidney and/or bladder stones and potentially significant kidney damage. In high doses, it’ll stop your heart. (Hypocalcemia isn’t just a bone problem; without sufficient calcium ions, your muscles, including heart muscles, are physically incapable of contracting.)

For those who want plutonium on the list, it’s actually not as poisonous as people usually think. Stuff like cyanide and botulin are much worse. That’s certainly not to say it’s safe — it’s still quite dangerous, especially if injected or inhaled. But I wouldn’t put it on a list of the 33 most deadly substances. It would end up a bit further down the list.

Which, if you think about it, just goes to show just how freakin’ dangerous some of these chemicals actually are.

I do note a number of factual errors in this article that bother me, such as the notion that cobras are vipers. They’re not. They’re elapids. Vipers, a class which includes some adders but more famously includes all rattlesnakes, have long, sophisticated switchblade fangs which inject a hemotoxin. Elapids usually have a neurotoxin instead, but less sophisticated delivery methods which mean that though their venom is more potent, they are less likely to successfully inject it. Elapids also include kraits, sea snakes, death adders (the word “adder” is pretty vague, and is applied to many venomous snakes that aren’t really related), and coral snakes.

I also found it odd that Amanitas mushrooms were described as “blossoms”. I’ve never heard of fungus referred to that way. This class of mushrooms does include some of the most lethal, such as the death cap and the destroying angel, though because Mother Nature is such a sick bastard, it *also* contains several similar-looking species which are not only perfectly safe, but counted as delicacies in some parts of the world. This is why mushroom-collecting is not for the ignorant. You’ve *got* to do your homework first.

  18. Some of the flowers listed look awfully familiar. I do alot of flower shoppings for my backyard. I’m sure nurseries and big chain stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot don’t carry these flowers but hey, who knows. Thanks for the great info!

  19. Anon

Nice research… the 33 “MOST” deadly substances on Earth list contains TWO snakes; neither of them are in the Top 5 deadliest snakes in the world.

  20. Doug

What about Prussic Acid? a mere whiff of the stuff will stop your heart fast! It was used in the assasinations of defecting Russians during the Soviet period.

  21. Anonymous

The hell are you talking about plutonium? Last I checked Osmium was the most poisonous element on the face of the earth.

  22. markw

You forgot the most deadly substance known to man- marijuana.

  23. You forgot……..NAZIS.

    GAGAGAGAGAGAGAGA

  24. ACM

    Whaaaat?

PCP, Nicotine, Codeine & Jimsonweed? RHUBARB leaves? These are not suited for “The most deadly substances on earth.”

I can name 1000 subtances more deadly than half of this list. Where the F*ck is the Box Jellyfish venom? How about the venom of at least 5 of Australia’s deadliest snakes? Funnel web spider venom? Krait venom?

Most physicians say “the only difference between medicine and poison is dosage.” Blood thinners like warfarin are a perfect example. In larger doses, they’re known as “Rat poison”

Clearly no medical or scientific background for the author.

  25. mushroomman

i know someone who’s tripped for 12 days after eating amanita muscaria. you’re retarded. look it up on any drug website. people eat it all the time and don’t die

  26. a

there are a lot of things on this list that people have consumed for ages. i don’t see how the #1 deadliest substance on earth can be one that people use recreationally; it CAN be deadly, but deadliest is a bit extreme for something you can consume repeatedly and live.

  27. Lousif

Makes you think of how they gathered all this knowledge of the symptoms before death. Also, How is that pufferfish in somebody’s hand if it’s so poisonous? And, “Plato wrote that Socrates drank a cup of hemlock cup..?”

  28. Thanks for freaking me out with the codeine one. I have to take it at the moment for pain cased by a busted shoulder. Turns out that using the standard tablets, you would need to eat a whole 40 tablet large packet, and the paracetamol they mix in would be way more likely to kill you as the codeine has an antidote. Even with the version the doctor has given me, it would take 13 tablets, and the paracetamol would clip me at 10 tablets. Paracetamol is WAY more dangerous. I call “cut and paste rubbish”.

  29. nick

dimethly mercury can be lethal with a dose as small as a microliter on to the skin and even through latex gloves.

  30. kanukey

I dont know how deadly is rhododendron…I know of people and places where this flower is used for making wines and juice and also added to alot of dishes as garnish…????

  31. Khalid Jarjour

Everydays we ingest chemicals from vegetables and meat & fish which also accumulate a lot of mercury and fatal elements simply present intact in nature…etc.

  32. Wow… very comprehensive list.

Would’ve been more impactful to do a reverse countdown but nevertheless a solid list with plenty of pics. Thanks!

    Mike

  33. What about prohibited drugs which are worst then Codeine. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

  34. Osmooms

    No Black Mamba??
    No dioxin??
    No Taipan??
And others have also corrected about castor oil plants. The things growe wild in their droves a mere 200 metres from my place..

  35. Kevin

It seems like Amanita muscaria does not actually contain Amanitin, or negligible amounts.
I think the author was talking about a different set of species of Amanita (hence the Destroying Angels bit he mentioned – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destroying_angel).
That being said, I’m never taking shrooms with you guys.

  36. For me the scary one is pufferfish venom… Really deadly substances.

  37. Phil E. Drifter

How about alcohol. Alcohol is poison.

  38. he 33 Most Deadly Substances On Earth

    uh-oh!!!

  40. Nikleen

“In 1968, woman did away with her wealthy but elderly sister by mixing the residue of several cigarette butts in water.” ?????

C’mon guys. jus cos other people on the internet are making lists doesnt mean everyone should. thats jus plain stupid. And not jus that part.

  41. Really great site…never new all these things were poisonous althought I’ve had a few inclinations in popular culture (e.g. the movie white oleander)

  42. Carman Hill

Try drinking a glass of fresh, cold, 8th Continent Complete Soy milk. It has a taste to die for….but you won’t.

  43. BP

Since Cobras have miraculously become vipers according to this article (they are not) and Gila Monsters (lizards with very weak venom) are included in this group of the “33 most deadly substances” one must wonder if the author bothered with researching any of this.

Please, if you make a list of such things, pull your head from your posterior opening and do your research.

  44. Very interesting, thank you for sharing! I will pass this along..

  45. Incredible…

..and what’s weird is, I have tons of hemlock growing in the this area and I had no idea it was toxic. Granted I’ve never ingested it, but it’s still good to know. Also interesting about the PCP; because despite hearing the word dozens of times, I’ve never actually KNOWN what it is or does.

  46. Cass

Most of the plants listed on here are medicinal in small quantities. I have watched an 82 year old man munch on Hemlock (A few leaves) with no ill effects. That being said I wouldn’t recommend it to the average lay person-he is an herbalist.

  47. Kyle

I have a bunch of Yew Trees right outside my school. We’ve been squishing those berries and throwing them at each other for years.

  48. adi

rhododendron flowers are used for making a juice which is a common drink in most of the Himalayas in India. its supposed to be extremely good with people having heart problems. never heard of it being poisonous
