We went in search of some of the best Etch-A-Sketch art we could find on the web. In no particular order, here’s a rundown of some of the top online Etch-A-Sketch masterpieces:
1. “Michael Jordan Montage”
One of the most widely seen works of Etch-A-Sketch art on the web””probably because it’s one of the best (by far). Whether you’re a sports fan or not, you just gotta appreciate this slam-dunk of a presentation.
2. “Small Town Scenic”
It’s tough to see all the detail on this one; the image is pretty small. Still, it’s an impressive small-town scene combining a great landscape with buildings, vehicles and people. And check out that great perspective!
3. “Magnificent Mona Lisa”
This one is just plain beautiful””an almost-exact likeness of the legendary Mona Lisa. Look at all that great detail in the background alone, as well as how carefully the dark clothes are filled in horizontally. A modern-day masterpiece!
4. “Street Fighter”
This looks like a fun little exercise in the street fighter vein, with an epic battle about to take place between the two main characters. Once again, we see good perspective and consistent, solid background shading. Time to draw!
5. “Clinton/Eagle/White House/Gore”
Two of the best Etch-A-Sketch portraits we’ve seen””and both in the same drawing! Not only are the Clinton and Gore likenesses spot on, but check out the detail on both the White House and eagle seal. Amazing work.
6. “Grand Theft Auto: Portrait”
We like this interesting use of screen orientation””turning the Etch-A-Sketch on its side for a “portrait” view vs. a “landscape” view. And this is one tough montage rendered very nicely; each small panel is a worth a closer look.
7. “Suburban Street Scene”
We’re especially drawn (no pun intended) to the great “cartoonish-ness” of this sketch, starting with interesting down-from-above perspective. Lots going on here to check out””all the people, the vehicles, the houses, everything.
8. “See the Andy Griffith Show”
Another phenomenal set of portraits, all in one magnificent piece of artwork. Each face is perfect to the line, and the overall composition couldn’t be beat. Almost makes you feel like you’re back in Mayberry.
9. “King of Sketches”
This exercise in detail is truly amazing; it’d be hard enough to draw a King of Hearts on paper, let along the Etch-A-Sketch. The piercing eyes, the flowing robes””and just how did the artist get those hearts so clean and black?
10. “Bio Shock”
Nothing too complicated here””just a sweet rendering of a scene from the computer game Bio Shock. The consistent use of “squiggles” as design or shading elements adds a solid Sci-Fi touch.
11. “Van Gogh – Starry Night”
Even if it weren’t a great rendition of Van Gogh’s famous painting, “Starry Night,” this would still be great Etch-A-Sketch art. It’s all wonderful, but we’re especially intrigued by the amazing shading techniques employed in the sky. Wow!
12. “Superbad/Supergood”
http://farm2.static.flickr.com
Two more caricatures showing off some serious Etch-A-Sketch chops, with the lettering superimposed over the characters. Also, some great shading techniques put to use here””take a closer look and enjoy.
13. “Lincoln/Obama: United”
Another in the presidential series that seems so popular with Etch-A-Sketch master artists, this example shows some truly spectacular draftsmanship. There’s simply not a flaw””from Lincoln to Obama to the Presidential Seal.
14. “Nice Sketch, Einstein”
A simple, beautiful portrait of this legendary thinker (and generally cool-lookin’ dude). The raw-but-detailed rendering style is reminiscent of underground cartooning in the 1960s and 1970s””perfect for the subject.
15. “Finally””Fab 4″
It’s about time””an Etch-A-Sketch portrait of rock and roll’s greatest all-time band! Just check out those clean-cut hairstyles (and how nicely they’re captured here). The mini-band shot is especially impressive. Fab!
16. “Heath Ledger: No Joking”
http://www.changethethought.com
A nice Etch-A-Sketch tribute to this inspiring actor who was taken from us much too soon. Plenty of tough things to render here””the hairstyle and makeup, the patterns in the clothes””but it’s all done to Hollywood standards. R.I.P., Heath.
17. “Zen Temple in B/W”
http://mariam.elnaggar.googlepages.com
There’s just something appropriate about a Zen-themed Asian scene on an Etch-A-Sketch. This calm, cool scene features a detailed mountainous background, complete with an ancient, four-level temple for good measure. Ohm.
