This was a mechanical bank popular in the late nineteenth century. The bank portrays an African American man riding a mule that, when pushed, throws the rider over it’s head as the coin goes into the bank. Displayed a violence against blacks that was acceptable at the time, and was also thought of as “fun”.

I used to have a ‘Greedy Nigger Boy’ money box and I didn’t turn out racist!
That is not to say I approve of such toys, but I do wish I still had it, because they are worth a fortune now.
Golliwog was the first black doll to hit the otherwise white-only doll shelves, it brought diversity and also he was portrayed by his creator Ms, Upton as a jovial and gallant hero (he also appears in Alan Moore’s LoEG:Black Dossier as a hero), he is not racist, but a breakthrough.
It is as if you said that Uhura in the original Star Trek was racist because she was the ship’s receptionist.
What part of that Obama doll is racist? Last time I checked, Obama was indeed black. If someone made Bush-monkey doll, no one would say that there is anything wrong with that.
As stupid as being racist is, it is equally stupid to say that every product that has, or doesn’t have black people in them, is racist.

The list is unbelievable enough… then you read the comments. Sheesh. All of these toys are NOW inappropriate regardless of how “breakthrough” they were way back when. The fact that the Gollywog was the only black doll on the shelves and it doesn’t even look like an Afircan-American is sad. It’s about misrepresenting people of color (or any ethnicity for that matter, I’m sure there are stereotypes about white people that they don’t appreciate), and acting as though it is acceptable. I don’t see why the Obama sock puppet is racist. People used to draw George W. Bush as a monkey all the time because, well, he kinda looked like a monkey. Obama has just as big of ears, so what’s the problem? Why is it racist when it’s Obama, and not racist when it’s Bush?
I understand some of these, but seriously, just because something is black doesn’t mean it is racist. That’s like someone saying that just because something is white it is racist. Yeah – some of these are a bit disturbing, but at the same time a lot of these comments seem to be rather loosing touch with reality a bit. I always rather liked the gollywog – though i never owned one. It looks a quirky and rather likable character – it would never occur to me that it could be offensive in itself (as opposed to people using it in a negative way, as people do everything). One might as well accuse Micky Mouse of being ‘mousist’ because he is such a stylized and unreal mouse. Or Barby dolls anyone? Or the Aunt Sally doll or GI Joe? Racism must be one of the most odious and brain-dead things humans have – but it seems to me that it does a dis-service to real racism when arguments on the subject get so silly and when some people desperately look for the negative ways of looking at even the most harmless things.
Obama wasn’t the first black guy to run for president, only the first selected as president.
I could also swear that someone did indeed make a Bush sock monkey. Of course since it was Bush it was OK and they probably got a .gov grant to fund it. The only difference was the color. People who have never had to endure any type of racial discrimination cannot possibly fathom what it’s like. By racial discrimination, im not only speaking of racism towards Blacks, but also Hispanics, Whites, Asians, and last but definitely not least, Native Americans (who are so often brushed under the rug and pushed to the side as if they are a dirty little secret). Racism is defined as:
the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races..
That means that if ANY person of ANY race considers their race to be superior to others, they are racist. In my opinion, most white people, who make up the majority of the American population, cannot truly understand what it means to encounter racism on a day-to-day basis. While some may hear the occassional “all white people are good for is….” or “white people are so [insert negative attribute here],” they do not experience the inundation of negativity towards their race that minorities feel from many outlets, the most powerful being the media. Although America has made great strides towards equality, not just for race, but gender and religion as well, hundreds of years of racism and a feeling of entitled superiority die hard. To those who say that MANY people overreact to the slightest racial insensitivies or to those who say that SOME people are just waiting for a sob story hoping to sue and make a quick buck, i say you are absolutely correct. However, those who have not lived through the daily racial injustice that is the reality for many non-whites will never understand how truly racist this country actually is. Is this country’s ingraned racism an excuse to succumb to low expectations? Absolutely not! But those of you who are not minorities do not realize that although our constitution declares all men equal, a solid 80+% of Americans do not.
