10 of The Most Racist Toys Ever Made

No before you ask I don’t agree with what any of these toys say – I have just compiled the list for the interest of you my readers.

1. Golly Wog

golly-wog

An English toy based on a 1885 book with a character of the same name. Many people still believe that the toy is a relic of an earlier time when racism against black people was blatant. Recently the Supermodel Naiomi Cambell assaulted airline staff after reportedly being called a ‘Golliwog supermodel’

2. Chop Suey Specs

3. Jogo Dos Grooms

racist-soldiers

A Portuguese game that involved shooting black soldiers with anything you could lay your hands on.

4. Darkey in a watermelon

darkey-in-a-watermelon

The advert describes the toy: “Upon opening the watermelon which is made of papier mache, is found a little pickaninany, southern darky with cloth diaper fasted with miniature safety pin and small nursing bottle. His white eyes flash the whole face indicated perfect happiness.”

5. Dapper Dan the Coon Jigger

dapper-dan

Not to be confused with the not-so-racist “Dapper Dan” that is currently available at Dapper Dan

6. Always did spise a mule

blackman-horse

This was a mechanical bank popular in the late nineteenth century. The bank portrays an African American man riding a mule that, when pushed, throws the rider over it’s head as the coin goes into the bank. Displayed a violence against blacks that was acceptable at the time, and was also thought of as “fun”.

9. Greedy Nigger Boy

The racist intent is so obvious with this item, I am shocked that this used to be gift for young children!

The Advert says it all:

“The Outfit comprises a black stocking mask that can be slipper over the head in a moment, odd eyes, buck teeth and banana plantation straw hat.”

Um why did you rename number 9? There is word ‘little’ in the toys name.

  2. admin says:

Dunno why – have changed it now..thanks for pointing that out Mike

  3. Hoof says:

Nice collection! I think most of them point to times that have gone by when they were not considered racist at all. By the white folks, that is :)

  4. admin says:

    Hi Hoof

    thanks for your kind comments!

I think you make a great point. These toys were seen as fun! I think that is what shock me most of all.

For Christs sake – a donkey kicking a black mans head in! How could this be deemed a toy!

  5. rick says:

I am so glad we live in a time where (at least in the US) there is some equality. These toys are all very disrespectful. It was only 35 years ago that civil rights laws were brought to what the constitution states.

  6. Luke H says:

It’s an interesting collection from a social and a historical perspective. Toys such as “Greedy Nigger Boy” (I feel guilty about just *typing* those words) are so clearly vehicles for spreading hate that you have to expand your definition of what a toy is.

Is it possible that a toy is also a way for adults to perpetuate their own views and prejudices? I think it is.

It is not really controversial any longer to argue that giving girls toy ovens and dolls, for example, is a way of reinforcing gender roles. This collection shows me that toys can also serve to reinforce racial prejudice.

I must admit to being a little offended to see these toys presented here but perhaps I should not be so sensitive. You are not, afterall, condoning or approving of these objects. You are just displaying them as interesting artifacts. Still, I wouldn’t blame someone for feeling offended at seeing such reminders of violently racist former times.

Seeing these toys reminds me of the “Coon Chicken” poster in the film Ghost World. The poster which is presented as “found art” but ends up causing problems for everyone associated with it as they become scapegoats for the towns disgust at its’ own dirty little secret – a history of racism.

  7. hot chop says:

So how do the “chop suey specs” manage to amuse?…

    you racist!

  8. Glenn says:

I would really LOVE to get a pair of chop suey specs – they would be hilarious and would have all of my non-racist friends and family pissing themselves laughing.

  9. MR says:

Intolerance is a part of every generation. Before we get too self-righteous, I’m sure some future generation will look back at our day and find us pathetic too. It’s popular right now to bash older white males and blame them for all the troubles in the world. If someone produces a toy called a Greedy CEO featuring a white guy in a business suit, would that be a stereotype? Would it be included on this list? How about a McCain sock puppet? I’m not condoning the toys listed above; they are offensive, but remember, not everything we believe to be right will stand the test of time.

  10. BobS says:

Why is it okay to refer to the current president as a monkey but not one of the presidential hopefuls? Please answer that question without mentioning race/ethnicity because, after all, we are beyond that rubbish.

  11. Marius says:

Funny, nowadays it’s cool to use that much spite against “rednecks”, abortion protesters et al. I guess the hate and spite itself isn’t the problem it’s who is on the receiving end.

  12. Packson says:

Sadly these are not that shocking, as I live in the Southeast. I can go to any antique store and pick up a “Greedy Nigger,” “Golly Wog,” or any black person-watermelon toy. They are still manufactured.

  13. Paul says:

How are the number 2 item the goggles with the slitty eyes “Racist” in any shape or form? Putting on the glasses to pretend you’re oriental is no different to taking on the aspects of anyone elses features.

Strangely enough a lot of orientals have slitty eyes as the goggles depict, its a genetic thing anyone can see that so making a toy to look like someone elses features and assuming its racist? Sorry but thats a rediculous statement.

Thats like someone from sweden putting on a black coloured wig and being called racist against africans. Picking on people with black skin specifically and creating a game where the actions are particularly nasty is a bit different, it infers some hatred towards a certain race for seemingly no other reason than their differences, the goggles however dont really strike me as promoting hatred towards anything.

Also number 7, hitlers limo… racist? Yeah right.
Racist against who in what possible way? Hitler’s limo running over a moulded road of dying jew’s possibly but just hitler in car? Give me a break.

We had golly wogs around when I was a kid and it never struck me as actually inferring any hatred towards black people either. I’ve got the sense to realise black people have darker skin because genetically they’ve evolved in a hotter country with a higher level of sunlight, the gollywogs were just black frizzy haired puppets, plus they’re smiling. I dont see what racial hatred they are intended to stir up but thats just my opinion.

The one’s im more bothered about are the items that throw around common use of the N word which a lot of black people obviously find extremely offensive, also the ones that clearly depict violence towards other races for fun. Bottom line is people are black, yellow, white, have different features, slitty eyes, big noses.

There is no harm or racist vibes in admitting this and accepting it, it’s when the features are used in a degrading manner or the notion put forward that they are somehow inferior to other races because of it.

Never be scared to say what something is, call it by its name.

  14. alexb says:

the metta tags for the sock obama though have been recalled are still

sock monkeys, politically plush dolls, obama doll, obama monkey, the sock obama, monkey obama, John Mccain

  15. donal h. says:

I don’t understand why you seem to be “shocked” at most of the black ones (and even include a relatively harmless hitler one) but are “amused” by #2. Personally I find them all somewhat amusing but was just wondering why it would be more acceptable to express amusement at that one except that you’re more afraid of blacks.

  16. alexb says:

why is this comment not showing up?

the metta tags for the sock obama though have been recalled are still

sock monkeys, politically plush dolls, obama doll, obama monkey, the sock obama, monkey obama, John Mccain

  17. Gern says:

Why on Earth would you be ashamed of these toys? They’re a snapshot of history. Yes, they were fun when they were originally made. (Excluding the Obama sock monkey.) Society changes. To look at history through the morals and mores of today is ridiculous. Put it into context instead, and view it as what was commonplace then and compare it to how far we’ve come as a society. In 50 years, will they look back at how we live today and be horrified by how we treat (fill in the blank)?

  18. AbVag says:

Interesting list. Amazing to know what was acceptable then. Course, I’ve always known it, but it’s a good reminder. It should also serve reminding what really is racism and what is using the race card. The majority of things today deemed racist are not racist, but used as such by evolved racists either unaware they’ve become what they detest or racists using their minority status for selfish gain. It’s for that reason why “hate speech” laws are unconstitutional.

Are what you listed an exception to my stance against hate speech laws? No. Why? Because today’s society can take care of such racism without the need for government involvement. I think the Obama puppet is proof of that. They put it up, the people gave them a justifiable tongue-lashing, they correct their error and remove it. That’s the way it should be.

  19. Alison says:

There’s a game that Parker Brothers put out in the late 19th century called “Heathen Chinee”– a card game where each card depicts a stereotypical “Chinee” character. I’ve seen a couple of these, one printed in the 1870s, one in the 1890s….
What I wonder about is what we take for granted now that will look outrageous to people 150-200 years from now– “how could they have been so dense?” There’s plenty to choose from.

  20. Dave Carrol says:

    Wow!

    That’s brutal!

    Jeepers

  21. Etna says:

I think our current president looks more like a monkey than potential candidate (and hopefully future president!) Obama.

Thanks for the post, I had no idea horrible things like this had ever existed.

  22. uri says:

By your exaggerated disgusted comments and by the topic you chose for this post(after all you must have some interest in racism) i do deduct that you are a racist after all. your guilt however denies your authentic enthusiastic comments and force you to politically correct dull faked “shocked” responses for each of the item.

  23. Cooter says:

i wish these toys were around when i was a kid!

  24. lucas says:

When most of these toys were made, racism wasn’t an opinion, it was fact. All the whites knew that the blacks were “n-words” (sorry, I chickened out). The blacks were completely voiceless and had just about as much power as dogs.

It’s amazing that line of thinking ever flourished at all, almost more amazing that it has taken that long for us to come this far. I know that racism still exists in this country, even among “normal” people (not toothless West Virginians of whom you’d expect that line of thinking) but I feel that someday, it will be completely gone.

Black and white are not separate races, anyway you look at it we are all people with the exact same problems, concerns, joys and hopes. We all evolved from the same monkeys.

  25. dmac says:

I find it amazing how much the world has changed, I wonder if they had such “toys” in the medival times or even roman.

  26. john hegedus says:

I used to own one of the ‘greedy nigger boy’ money boxes way back in the 50s and, as a child, I just thought of it as ‘my money box’. Growing up in the North of England I had never even SEEN a black person so it meant nothing to me then in the way of racism. When I came across it a few years ago, though, lurking in the attic and read the ‘Jolly Nigger Boy’ inscription on the back I have to say I was shocked and horrified!

What I am saying is that times have changed. My parents would not have given me that money box if they had known it would offend people. They were the most tolerant people I ever knew and I, myself went on to have many black friends at college. To us, it was just a moneybox! Fashions change. We used to be careful to call black people ‘coloured’ as that was considered ‘correct’ at the time. Nowadays that term is considered offensive.

Surely, all that matters is that we love and respect one another regardless of race or creed. The language is just a matter of fashion.

  27. ROb says:

Like how it has 88 diggs.

    Heil Hitler!

  28. Fool says:

Yes things at one time were a lot different. I can remember buying the candy at the corner drug store in New York called nigger babies. Even the black kids I played with called them that. Was that a simpler time or was we just dumb and uncaring?

  29. Kevin says:

Why are you still spreading this hate? I suppose putting a disclaimer at the top saying “I don’t agree with what any of these toys say” makes it ok does it? You rascists make me sick!

  30. Steve says:

Why is it ‘racist’ if the toy depicts a dark skinned person??? There are millions of simillar toys with white faces – are these not racist?

    I’m confused!

  31. billy-jo says:

where can i get the obama-monkey toy?!! it’s brilliant! hahah

  32. RM says:

This just shows how ungodly ignorant people have been. I was horrified. Whether you call them artifacts or toys or whatever, they’re a disgrace. Too bad we can’t make degrading toys based on the assholes who invented this trash.

  33. Adolf Jr. says:

I think these toys should be brought back. I mean, seriously, they give moral values and proper ideas where such said things should forever remain! :D

  34. J.R. says:

    O.O

I am really surprised that someone made something like that about Barack Obama.

To be honest, I am surprised that any of this ever came out, but whatev.

  35. jerk says:

    funny as hell

  36. Dottsy says:

Thank you for posting this. As a black woman, it’s a reminder of how out and out racist things were back in the day, and there are even some reminders that it’s still out there today. Whew!

  37. Dennis says:

boy, these do kinda make you ashamed to even see and read the names on them.

old stuff that was popular at one time and certainly not appropriate today.

sad to say, i’ll bet these would fetch a good price on eBay.

  38. Jesus says:

Would they be considered racist, if these toys depicted white people, and sold in Africa?

  39. Mitch says:

These toys are hilarious. I love it!! How funny! I must get my hands on these. I would play with them all day long.

  40. Ymer says:

I’m not sure how to say this but I actually have no. 9 sitting in my bookcase right now. The gold on his shirt is white on mine but that’s definitely the one. I was actually a young child when I got it so, er… I don’t think I grew up to be a racist at least.

I gotta go think about “stuff”…

  41. mary says:

blatant racism doesnt usually offend me but something about these “toys” reeeeaaaly pisses me off. Earlier this year I actually saw a gollywog in a shop in Paddington Station in London.

  42. dcosta says:

I really don’t see why someone would be offended by the fact that these toys were presented here. Have we as a society become so sensitive that we can not muster up the courage to even look at something that might offend us?

I do agree that they are racist, but am I so offended that I can’t even look at them?

    No.

  43. lmao says:

lmao, im half black and some of this shit is amazing
    hahahahhh

  44. Joanne says:

wow… this stuff is rather shocking. :(

  45. Project2501a says:

You guys should see Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled”. In the film Lee shows some of his items in his collections that show off the racist substrate.

  46. Dean says:

I don’t feel that you can call number 8 racist considering http://www.bushorchimp.com/ ,
    http://www.funnyjunk.com/pages/monkey.htm ,
    http://www.flumesday.com/images/bush/monkey.jpg ,
unless you consider bush being portrayed as a monkey racist too.

  47. Kero says:

As a little girl, my grandmother gave me a Mammy doll. A mammy doll is a dark skinned (african) doll, dressed more or less in traditional plantation style clothing. I don’t know why she got me that doll, I suspect her reasons did border on racist when I reflect on it. Thankfully her foul intentions totally backfired.

I adored that doll growing up. It wasn’t a ragdoll type, it was a rubber/plastic doll with amber eyes that opened/closed when you tilted the doll. She had refined features, modest-yet-lovely makeup accents, perfectly curled shiny black tresses (spiral curled hair), The headcloth was a beautiful silk and had a pretty pattern, the dangling hoop earings looked lovely and sophisticated. Her dress was simple, but refined. To a child who was (and still is) color blind, she was fantastic. My barbie dolls were boring in comparison.

The toys here though? Terrrible. Strange how backwards we all were, a very short time ago.

  48. thatguy says:

“Whilst not as obviously racist as the rest of the toys…”

Actually this comment makes YOU look bad. That toy is in no way racist.

Hitler persecuted the Jews and there is NOTHING racial about being Jewish. Unless you’re a Nazi and actually believe Jews are their own race I guess…

I’d suggest changing your comment. btw, I happen to be German and not Jewish.

  49. billy bob nigger fac says:

    haha not funny nigger toys.

  50. Charles says:

    OMG!!!
    I can’t stop laughing!

  51. Rei says:

Weren’t Golly wog’s in old episodes of Noddy? I can remember them…

  52. Laugh at it All says:

While I would in no way ever endorse, or buy “toys” like these, I did get a good laugh at the expense of the ignorant people that created them. I am a bit shocked that in the year 2008 that the Obama sock doll was created, and can only write that one off to knuckle draggers who still can’t transcend ignorance.
Anyway, great collection of historic ignorance, preserve it well, those who don’t know their history…

  53. bingbong says:

I am surprised to see golly wog as #1.
I remember I had one when I was little.
Didn’t mean I associated it with negative portrayal of people with darker skin than mine.

Being Australian I don’t really have any connection with black slavery. But I do know that Australian settlers and previous generations used to shoot abo’s.
In the end we are all a bunch of bastards, wogs, limey whiteys usually ignorant and scared of people different than ourselves.
Let’s let go of our egos and stop being so offended. Love yourself and love others. Acept people as people.

  54. english girl says:

I grew up in England. Myself and all my cousins had golliwogs. Not just dolls but also pins and other such things. At the time, it was just a doll to me, not blatently racist, because it was made so differently from some of my other dolls. Later, absolutely I recognized the difference and sadly don’t have my golliwog anymore. I would have liked to have kept it as a testimony to the way things have changed for the better. Later as a child, I also had a native indian doll, and a brown skinned doll that was constructed the same way my other dolls were. But I do miss my golliwog….

  55. Tony says:

Where can I buy these? Seriously though, why dig through the archives to find examples of racism? Why not just attempt to let the healing begin? Do we honestly need to go back through the past to dredge up reasons to hate? If we can’t get along, the terrorists have already won. I seriously want one of those banks though.

  56. Jerome Washington says:

Man, these toys are funny. As a black man, I feel as if people have lost their sence of humor and need to quit being so damn serious all of the time! “Niggas be aktin crazy!”

  57. john boy says:

so where can i purchase the toys at?

  58. This is a crazy assortment of toys from a (hopefully) lost era. I just finished reading a book that reference Golly Wog and now it makes more sense.

  59. jesse j says:

This is the perfect christmas list.

  60. Joonas K. says:

I’m a racist, hahahaa. I like these toys. They should be forever a reminder that black people should be at the farm working their asses off while white folk (the good folk) sit at the porch and drink lemonade.

    White powaah!!!

  61. Alan says:

I wonder if the sock puppet was George Bush if it would still be for sale?

I remember jars of Jam in the UK with the Golliwog on a few years ago.

  62. Jim says:

Nobody should be offended by these. They were from a time in our past when such blatant racism was commonplace and even encouraged in some places. I don’t even blame the people from yesteryear as they were quite ignorant. But what we should take away from looking at these is the fact that we have come a long way and to remember the mistakes of the past. Not forget them. We can’t change history, only make sure that such ignorance never happens again. If not for ourselves then for our children at least.

  63. craig says:

“Displayed a violence against blacks that was acceptable at the time, and was also thought of as “fun”.”

    How moronic.

So if the character was white…Would it “Display a violence against whites that was acceptable at the time?”

It’s not racist. It’s a fucking horse kicking off a man. It’s classic slapstick.

Grow up and stop painting every toy and novelty with a 100 y/o black character “racist.”

  64. It’s astonishing that this was ever considered normal? i’m laughing uncompfortably at them as it is increadulous when this kind of ignorance is uncovered.

Great find, really makes you think!

  65. Johnny Darko says:

funny, theyre pretty much all products of white people.

  66. N says:

Interesting point about the golliwogs. They first appeared in an Enid Blyton book back in the 50s, as the bullies who picked on Noddy. Interestingly, gollys (since, according to the last info I found on the subject, only the “wog” part is actually offensive :-S) can still be found in some reprints of the books, and on certain jars of jam, but as happy, kind, helpful figures. The bullies have now become green-faced goblins.

  67. Getoveryourselves.. says:

Not only White people were / are racists against blacks/african americans…

  68. Calum Kegner says:

What’s wrong with the hitler limousine. I have one of those.

  69. jibbs says:

My mum has one of those money boxes still in the attic. No.9.

  70. Hannah says:

I remember having a “gollywog” when I was a little girl, and I’m not even thirty. I can’t speak for the values of my grandma who knitted it, but I know that as far as I was concerned, it was just like my other ragdolls, but black. I guess the racism of gollywogs exists only as far as the values of the adult people in my life who had opinions on those things. In my 4 year old head, people being valued differently for the way they look, was fortunately beyond my scope of understanding.

I suppose that, because the concept of black slaves, or for that matter, race stereotypes, was something I only learned of much much later, gollywogs never seemed racist to me. I can see how they are racist now, but as a kid I’m glad I was so innocent.

  71. Chvad SB says:

Great post. If you watch the end of “Bamboozled” there are a number of shots of these types of toys. It’s pretty creepy to think this stuff was/is somehow seen as fun.

  72. Nigel Ater says:

I think they accurately portray the fact that coloureds are a sub-species that have still to adapt to a life full of subtle looks, turns of phrase and gestures that you find in todays western worlds. Im afraid that they were just taken from their more primitive environment before they had properly evolved to deal with european and american lives.

  73. TopTenz says:

This is a very interesting and shocking list. Wish I had thought of it for my site. Excellent work. How did you find these? Google search?

  74. Broax says:

I’m portuguese and I’m very embarassed to have a portuguese toy in this list (“Jogo Dos Grooms”). Keep in mind that by the time that game was published we where in the middle of a opressive regime that was on war against our african collonies and we’ve come a long way since those days…

    Why majora?! Why?

  75. bob says:

    haha its sooooooooooooo funny

  76. Darkman says:

These toys were considered fun for the same reason they are now considered offensive — the social climate. Being politically correct is the current flavor. 100 years ago you would have laughed at a black man’s head being kicked in by a donkey in the same way you now find it repulsive.

  77. I find #4 to be most interesting. It’s not hateful at all — it’s actually kind, gentle, even compassionate. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s incredibly, stupidly condescending and racist. You oten see this kind of “compassion” racism today with regards to native people, but not often to blacks.

  78. mona says:

i always thought golly wogs were really cute… im not racist, but they look so sweet..my friend had one at school but she had it taken off her, she was very upset, she loved it to bits :(

  79. The toys are quite racist, but I find reading through the comments more shocking. I don’t find the list humorous. It is interesting and disgusting.

I am equally disgusted by the feeling that it was cute and somehow alright because that is how things were. I think it is something that we should be embarrassed about. I think it is something to be shamed by.

You may have fond memories wrapped up in say your childhood love of a “mammie” doll, but you can not deny the racist significance of a woman being forced to work and care for white children while her unable to properly care for her own children. Then we make it into a toy and suddenly she is so sweet.

Oh and I am a fellow German to the one commenter above and while classifying Jews as a race is still in debate you cannot deny that they aren’t the victims of racism. Can you think of a joke about Jewish people off the top of your head? I think you probably can. I agree with the cars inclusion. That was a dark time in world history. It is also something in my own cultural history I find shame in and I believe it is good to have shame about that. It is shameful.

I’m not trying to make this into a big deal. I just saw the toys and was taken aback, but what people used to make and then the comments got to me.

  80. Can I also add that nothing about toys featuring black babies during that time period were made to be sweet. Don’t forget about ads at the time, this one (http://www.authentichistory.com/diversity/african/alligator/1920sc_Little_African_Dainty_Morsel.html) is from 1920 for licorice candies.

It also now serves the purpose of reminding how babies were also made to work; as bait to catch alligators.

So think about that the next time you find the little baby in the (ahem) watermellon cute.

  81. I swear I am not trying to be a troll or whatever and flood the comments. I just think it is very important that people know the stories behind these things. Earlier I wrote an (ahem) before writing watermelon and that is because I thought the in itself was racist, but I wanted to look it up first. Sure enough:

“Numerous primary sources chroncle Black resistance to slavery through “silent sabotage,” or, day-to-day acts of resistance. Stealing from the master was one example. It seems logical that, given that food would be among the most desirable of items a slave would pilfer, and chickens and watermelons would have been commonly available. Solomon Northup, for example, tells of being put in charge of punishing slaves who got into the master’s watermelon patch. Rather than carry out the punishment, Northup had the slaves show him the way to the patch. The connecting of Blacks to chicken and watermelon was done in a way to dehumanize Blacks and subject them to ridicule. This process helped contribute to prejudice and discrimination. Surprisingly, many young people are unaware of the long history of these stereotypes, while some older Black people refuse to eat watermelon because of that history. And yet the stereotype still exists.”

Further info and plenty of examples of racist imagery featuring watermelons can be found here: http://www.authentichistory.com/diversity/african/chickenwatermelon/index.html

  82. Entz says:

Golly Wogs are racist against native Australians as opposed to Africans.

  83. I’d like to have #9 for my desk at work, but some goddamned nigger would probably cry about it. That’s all those darkies down here are good for.

  84. DJK says:

In response to Nigel’s comment on Africans and being taken from their ‘primitive environment’, I urge you to consider and ponder where where every other race came to get education on science, math, agriculture, etc. Ever heard of the Pyramids? Still standing huh? No ladders, cranes, and other so-called “european inventions”.

Ohh…you must think Aristotle and Socrates came up with all of that on their own…lol. I’m sorry. Do your research before you talk about how primitive Africans are. I mean, it’s the Motherland, the start of man and CIVILization. Why do you think so many companies are over there raping the land for ALL of its diamons, iron, silver, oil, etc.? It’s where it all started.

  85. Muu says:

I was thinking how silly these toys were when I saw them. I was thinking what a strange bit of historical artifact these were. I thought that they were interesting, and obviously racist. I was thinking that I’m glad we don’t live in such racially motivated times.

However, I then read some of the comments and realized how racist and race oriented we are still. People obviously can’t handle racism, even from a bygone era as they feel the need to either lampoon, defend, or rebuttal. Why can’t you take it just as it is? Why can’t you look at it and say “Wow, that was racist. I’m sure glad I don’t live in those racist times.”? You all make me sick at the fact that race is so prevalent in your minds.

Obviously the poster posted this as a way to show how much out society has changed. Apparently that was lost.

  86. Chris Laxton says:

that obama doll looks like it may be a Paul Frank monkey. which would be kinda even more funny, cause Paul probably never even put two and two together till he had them all made up and was so happy and excited, and then he goes to show all his closest friends for the first time, tellin them about this cute new obama inspired doll, and they get a sneak peek before it gets shipped to stores, and he pulls it from behind his back and they all look at each other and then the ground and are all like ‘uhhh paul…’

  87. Tony says:

The Obama sock puppet wasn’t racist, they made one for McCain too and no one complained about that one!

What you have to be “African American” to be eligible to pull the race card?

Its just stupid and people need to find something else to waste their time on, I don’t want to hear it.

  88. mmm says:

Where can I buy these toys? They are all hilarious.

  89. ME says:

Well, this is funny, not the racism, but the way the people put the things… If any of these toys were about white people, nobody would complain…
    The racism is inside yourselves

  90. anon says:

Well I thought that the obama toy was quite cool and not very racist. THat example is very subjective and if yo think that is racist then wait till you the picture of me with a head scarf.
Fuck your political correctness, we are all from the same blood

  91. mo says:

It is not racist of you to post this. You are presenting a bit of history that we should not forget. No, they’re not something to be proud of, but we need to remind ourselves that some progress has been made and we have more to go. I would never consider censoring this post, I would caution that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it…

  92. Dave says:

The monkey-in-a-suit one was pretty funny. The bank, too.

As for the whole “racist” thing… you know, don’t be a dick.

  93. wit says:

All the comments section needs is a replacement of half the comments with WHITE POWER — which is what these “durrr dahurrr hurrrrrr but there are white stereotypes why doesn’t anyone get offended by those but us?” people really want to say.

  94. admin says:

To David and the other racist comment makers, I will be deleting your comments if I feel they offend me.

It’s my blog so my call.

  95. wit says:

Seriously I’m not seeing enough ASCII swastikas here accompanying gems such as:

“Why is it okay to refer to the current president as a monkey but not one of the presidential hopefuls? Please answer that question without mentioning race/ethnicity”

    What’s going on?

  96. DfromShmups says:

Racists are always so deep in denial saying stuff like: “I’m not racist, but yadda yadda yadda”.
And yes, I’m deeply emberassed by racists. They offend my intelligence as a human being.

  97. Binx says:

I think you should remove the Obama doll, or put it in context at least.

The doll was made in Japan which consider the monkey the smarter animals and not as a negative slang word for a black person. Although it is no longer on sale, they did realise the connotations of the animal in the west.

Do you still consider it racist or a cultural misunderstanding?

  99. MICKoWAR says:

Hahaha these are classics, I bet some of them would be worth a fair penny too! =D

As for the whole racist thing, its idiots who point out the differences by saying “na thats racist dont say that, the black/asian/what ever/white guy even will take offence to it!”

Unless ofcourse its pure outright racism which isnt what im talking about. But as far as saying im gonna get gook food or what not, if you find that offensive your an idiot!

Oh and on that note the person im basically married to of many many years is ASIAN!! :P just before some sook starts having a whinge at me lol

  100. mniepnapp says:

Answering “Why is it okay to refer to the current president as a monkey but not one of the presidential hopefuls? Please answer that question without mentioning race/ethnicity” correctly:
Because, in the first case, the monkey image is mostly based on character, intellect and false pride, in the second one on appearance, which could be seen as a low, childish insult.

  101. Коля says:

    А че, прикольна!

  102. bob says:

    hahaah hillarious

  103. cloistered says:

I’m so sick of ugly-minded people comparing monkeys to black people. Have you seen the statistics on monkey crime? Almost negligible. And monkeys do significantly worse on SAT scores (but that may just be institutional bias in favor of black people). And finally, monkeys create very little of the world’s crappy music or unfunny sitcoms. Please lay off the monkeys.

  104. empanada says:

What about the worst example of racism ever- Tickle-Me Elmo. The single most disastrous thing that has ever happened to the cause of Muppet equality.

  105. Andelle says:

We actually had number 9 in my store. A black lady bought it and told us it reminded her of her brother. Lol.

    I kid you not.

I work in an antique store, by the way.

  106. tl says:

Why is it that white people are the ones who are always tapped as racists? There is plenty of that to go around in every ethnicity. Being white, black, Asian, Mexican, whatever, there are lots and lots of racists regardless of the color of your skin or the shape of your eyes. Try having a white TV awards show, or a white college scholarship. How about a white Miss USA competition, nope can’t do it it’s racist, it’s ok for other ethnicities to have those things, but not for white people, nope, no way, racist. Hmmmm seems racist to me. Then of course you have the glorious Rev. Jackson plastered all over the news for using the “n” word when he thought nobody was listening, just like Don Imus did on his radio program, he caught holy hell, turn about is fair play, should we silence the Reverend just like Imus was, fair is fair, but nope if that happens it’s white people being racist again….. It’s quite a conundrum don’t you think? It’s a shame everyone can’t put on their big person panties and get along.

  107. Tiffany says:

okay you want to know why it would be racist for white people to do that? because white people were racist for thousands of years! there were white schools, white colleges, white bathrooms, white drinking fountains. its about damn time that there was stuff for other ethnicities. its good there is now a time for other ethnicities to be ahead not just white people. white people, kicked, killed, spit on, segregated, other races for years so now that they have something to be proud of don’t try &make is racist cuz they deserve it right about now I think

  108. jake says:

Haha, ohh tiffany. It’s the sad people like you that ensure that racism will never ever go away. I don’t know about you, but there are plenty of white people around today that absolutely do NOT ‘deserve’ to be stepped on because of the color of their skin. Maybe we live in different parts of the country.

Yes, I agree that these items are offensive. But they are valuable anthropological artifacts. They show us how bad it can get.

So do me a favor. Step away from your parents and their parents on this one. Be an individual and see people for something other than their skin. I’ll do the same. We’re getting a lot better, don’t go back now.

  109. jjneall says:

Two of the biggest racist alive (not to mention egomaniacs) are the Rev Jessie Jackson and Uncle Al Sharpton both, can I say this without offending, black. So racist come in all sizes, shapes and yes folks colors.

  110. hah says:

Why dont they still sell stuff like this? I want each one of these items.

  111. Lisa says:

these have all cracked me up, the ones i would buy would be the hitlers limousine, or the greedy nigger boy money box…genius!

  112. LipSync says:

Tiffany. And you don’t think that it went the other way as well? Are you even aware that blacks had black slaves also? This is just a tip of the iceberg. And there is no way that I am going to teach you about it all. You people can only do that yourselves.

    Read and learn.

  113. Child Of God! says:

  114. Stefan says:

wtf the golly wog wasnt based on any black person. and i dont understand how all u people think its us WHITES being raciest, god created adam and eve who were WHITE!

Then monkeys came along and so did every one else including white people i think that the world we live in today is so f-ing bad people killing other people for the colour of their skin like one man said:

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

    I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of “interposition” and “nullification” — one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

    I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; “and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

now this was said by Martin Luther King Jr and still today he has had an effect on the black peoples community and white so research says

all im trying to say is that White, Black, Asian ect should all live together in harmony

  116. Westie says:

I’m surprised at how many people are saying that these are a good example of how ignorant and racist white people were in the past and how it was amazing that black people were treated and viewed like this.

Yet no-one has mentioned that racism and prejudice is just as prevalent today and only the faces have changed. Doesn’t seem too long ago that muslims and arabs were a fair and publicly accepted target despite the vast majority of the them just being ordinary people too.

  117. Andrew says:

Great post. There are a bunch of cartoons as well over on archive.org that would not be tolerated these days.

  118. Idris says:

Stefan, ur retarded if u say that gollywog wasnt based off a black person. (yes im black)

  119. bob says:

    it isn’t. the term
Golly Wog is used many times in Japanese movies and culture and is a get this dust bunny. for example there’s a children’s movie called Totoro now i find when cleaning dust bunnies they arent in fact people african descent or not

  120. Anonim-o says:

i guess all this resent was cuz of the whole slavery thing… Mexicans went through the same thing!!! even worse!!! but we were smart enough to charge them for the work lol

I am not sure if there were toys like this in the middle ages but you only have to read Shakespeare (Othello and Merchant of Venice, to name but two) to know that racism existed in the 1500s.

It is a sad fact that members of the human race always want to feel superior. Those who are at the bottom of the pile will always try to find someone to persecute.

I really dont think these toys are important though, in themselves. Most people who bought them were not racists. To them, they were just toys the same as Barbie and Action Man.

  124. Nathan McLaughlin says:

    q. what do you call a white male?
    a. racist

yes, im black (mixed race, but all the same…)

  125. Yea yea says:

Before we can ever eliminate blatant racism, we have to eliminate people’s tendency to let their race define their personality. So many in the world allow their color to define the way they will act, what music they listen to, and to define their personality. It is ridiculous that any black person in the south who does not act ghetto, listen to rap, and like women for their physical appearance only is shunned and labeled as a white black guy. We need to eliminate racism, but we also need to eliminate the undertones of race in our personalities. I believe you can retain your culture without allowing it to limit you.

  126. WhiteWoman says:

I am a 44 year old white woman raised in California and living in Oregon.
I WISH we still had slaves because I want one!
Blacks act different than us whites. Period. So do Mexicans and I’m sure other races like Filipinos but none act as bad as blacks. They are not as intelligent as the white race (as a whole). Yes, there are dumb whites that act retarded. And a few blacks that act intelligent. But overall, the black race acts like idiots and their place is serving us whites. I really wish it was still that way. That’s the way it should be and I will be forever bummed that I missed out on that great era when blacks were in their place.

  127. WhiteMan says:

I agree with WhiteWoman’s comment below. I also think woman should be put back in their place and should not be allowed to vote or have any rights. (end of sarcasm)

    Get with it lady.

    - A young white male

  128. WhiteManII says:

Nathan McLaughlin, I certainley hope that you realized how rascist that joke you made was even if you are trying to make a point. That is known as generalization and is not a fair judgement to make.

And WhiteWoman, my best wishes are for you and I hope that you find the mental help you so greatly need soon.

  129. WhiteWoman says:

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves all his life. Did he need mental help WhiteManII?
Lots of great men owned slaves.
And btw WhiteMan, I have no more rights than a slave myself and I’m already “in my place” so I don’t see your point here….

  130. Coco says:

    white woman

u r a sad ignorent lady that needs to get educated! yes white ppl can be stupid YOU ARE 1 OF THEM i think its disgusting what you have said! ppl are ppl skin color may be different but…. were all human!!!

  131. Ectes says:

    Heh.
Most of the comments here are the real reason racism (as many people here are defining it) wont go away.

It’s a two way street. I mean, if a black guy gets a promotion at work despite being inferior to a white man, it’s this so called ‘affirmative action’.

C’mon. Call a shovel a shovel. Its giving someone special attention based on their race. Isnt that the definition of racism?

Yes these things happened. In RETROSPECT, they were unfair to a particular race. I like to think that we live in a more tolerant society (although some people still like to cling to the old ways and its them that make the newspapers) and the idea of racism has changed in definition.

The day rappers stop using the word nigger because its “offensive” is the day I will think about being offended by it.

Stop playing into the hypocrisy inherent in a system where we always seem to run everything past every last minority to make sure that its PC and ok to post/publish/say. I’m willing to bet that no matter what anyone, anywhere says, someone else will take offense to it.

Racism is only an idea based on history and our PC-heavy world. I say, say what you want and if someone gets touchy with it, sort it out between the two of you.

  132. Latex Santa says:

Racism is not “a thing of the past”. It has merely evolved into something more subtle and often undefinable. People need to put the times these toys were produced in into perspective, and consider that the Bible does not cite colour anywhere. Think about where Jesus “lived”. Would he really have been white? Really? You get culturally blind people all over, particularly (though I hate to have to point this out) in America – and yes, I have been there…

  133. Shaden says:

sadly racism is never going to go away by what I ´ve seen the way we live today in America is a good as its going to be tolerant but with many racist undertones. i say its never going to go away because many parts of the world are still very racist way more then here, i am a Mexican American who my whole life has gone to Mexico on vacations to visit family and never understood why the other Mexicans would risk their lives crossing the border to escape such a beautiful country till i lived there for a year.According to what i saw there are two types of Mexicans, the light skinned ones who are seen as beautiful and have successful jobs and live well and the dark skinned ones who are discriminated by there own people and get the crap jobs that nobody wants. of course here in America they still have to do the crap jobs but they get payed a fair wage for doing so and with hard work and time could get the respect that many of the other minorities have gain.

  134. Derelict says:

    136. “Is it possible that a toy is also a way for adults to perpetuate their own views and prejudices? I think it is.”

Maybe, but religion works much better.

    56. “I think it is something that we should be embarrassed about. I think it is something to be shamed by.”

I am neither embarrassed nor shamed by actions that took place decades before I was born, by people not in any way related to me. Although I happen to be “white”, I descend from basque sheepherders who scratched out a living, in many cases under indentured servitude in the U.S., and who didn’t own slaves. By happy chance, I grew up in just about the most racism-free part of the U.S, as well. I find racist comments and actions of any stripe extremely ignorant.

    45. “Well I thought that the obama toy was quite cool and not very racist. ”

That’s because you probably grew up in an era where nobody referred to black people as “monkeys”. I didn’t know about that particular bit of slang either, until I read an article about a holiday Santa getting fired over a “lookit the monkey in the mirror” comment.

    20. “wtf the golly wog wasnt based on any black person. and i dont understand how all u people think its us WHITES being raciest, god created adam and eve who were WHITE!

Then monkeys came along and so did every one else including white people …”

Heh. Wow. You managed to mix in creationism with a speech on race relations, while simultaneously missing the point.

    15. “it isn’t. the term
Golly Wog is used many times in Japanese movies and culture and is a get this dust bunny. for example there’s a children’s movie called Totoro now i find when cleaning dust bunnies they arent in fact people african descent or not”

And a cracker is just something to put cheese spread on. Unless it’s a label under a picture of a white person. Get it yet?

    White Woman

I had to smile when I read your comments. Apparently the vast majority of black people are not as intelligent as you but you can still write something as ungrammatically correct as ‘blacks act different than us whites’ :> For your information, that should have read “blacks act differently from whites’. and, maybe they do but, before you start accusing people of being less intelligent than you, maybe you should look to your own poor knowledge of the English Language?

  136. Boo Radley says:

John, you are a maggot. Don’t criticize someone for how they type a damn comment that hardly anyone reads anyways. I doubt she was trying to write a formal thesis or anything.
As for the topic: monkey monkey monkey. I want one of those obama monkeys. And the reason white toys wouldn’t be racist is because we are the majority, so it can’t be racist. Sorry minorities.

  137. Penis says:

    Suck my pick maggot.

  138. Chris says:

Wait…it can’t be racist if you’re the majority? Did I miss something? Seriously?

  141. CNPass says:

I’m also concerned the effect of video games on our youth. I am a 22 year old who is a history/politics major and also play videogames. However, some of the recent games I can’t even bring myself to play because its more like propaganda. Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat is a game that is currently flying off shelves, kids i know ages 7 to 18 all play it obsessively. It is modern combat set against ‘terrorists’ of arab descent, mixed with a backdrop of cold war flashbacks, when we were fighting the ‘commies’ instead of the ‘terrorists’. The violence is explicit and realistic, powered by modern physics-simulating graphics engines. Literally millions go into R/D, and millions more are made with the sale of this game…millions of copies going into the hands of a youth who not only have no source of honest information about the world, but an active ministry of propaganda (FOX/CNN/NYTIMES etc).

Anyway, in a time where these kids dont understand their own history, let alone the complex nightmare of twentieth century American foreign relations, using the pinnacle of american computer technology to create a fun, racist, and violent propaganda for our children seems tantamount to treason. then again, maybe it is just a sign of how far we have fallen into the military-industrial-academic culture of aggression and hubris.

yeah maybe of topic, but talking about what consitutes a ‘toy’ these days…maybe these are what we (white america) considers fun. the sad truth perhaps is that not only are we racist and violent, but we enjoy it. (?)

  148. cjsavvy says:

Well, its just too bad people behave like that. Whites, blacks, whatever! Blame the color itself. In any situation, black simply isn’t very appealing, so maybe that’s why black people face the brunt of jokes and other put downs.

  149. me says:

  150. Orchid says:

This list is centered around toys that are demeaning to non-white people. In Asia, they have toys that similarly are demeaning to white folks. In Japan, they sell toys similar to the Asian glasses (“Chop Suey Specs”). They have a huge nose and bushy hair attached to them. Sometimes they have blue eyes painted on them. There are a wide variety of these types of items and all of them are used to mock foreigners as having gigantic schnozes and being very hairy.

The only difference between Western countries and Japan in regards to such toys is that the Japanese are not the least bit ashamed of them. They wear them on T.V. programs and make fun of white people to this day.

Some of these “disguises” are pictured in an article here:

The Obama Sock Puppet isn’t racist. They have a McCain version which is practically identical, except he is white like a cracker…

Holy shit McCain is ‘white’ and so is his monkey sock puppet counterpart. So were is the problem with the Obama ‘black’ monkey.

    They are both hilarious. :D

  152. Avital Pilpel says:

The Gollywog (or Golliwog) doll is NOT racist.

As Martin Gardner notes, Golliwog was originally a children’s book character. The series proved extremely popular, and the character featured in a whole series of adventures. He is always a perfect gentlemen–brave, polite, upright, honest, trustworthy, and so on. He is the good guy and the hero of the stories.

If anything, the Golliwog books are (by today’s standards) *anti*-racist, showing the black-skinned character in a very positive light. In fact he’s not even supposed to be a person, but rather a gnome.

As for the Obama doll–er, it seems to me it’s humorous payback for all those “Bush is a chimp” comments. It’s not a racist toy since it’s not a toy at all. It’s just (snarky) political commentary.

  153. ramanar says:

Yeah, COD 4 is propaganda because we all know there are not any arab terrorists. And communism wasn’t bad either. And Goldmember from Austin Powers was Dutch and we know from this that the Dutch are all evil. By that logic you must think our kids believe that aliens can come through a portal from another dimension and want to enslave humans because they played a game that came in an ORANGE BOX. Why don’t you worry more about the indoctrinating that’s going on in your own public schools by teachers with agendas, making their own views and opinions about our history part of the lesson for the day instead fact and research.

  157. FarSide says:

The problem is people have to be so idiotic about toys that where made probubly b4 they were born. Grow up get a life, and nice page by the way!!!!!My grandfather was in the KKK, when it was actually JUST about blacks not this crazy stuff of 2day.

  159. neala says:

I must say that I found these toys to be very funny. In the name and the description. I don’t believe that I am a racist as such, more that I appreciate socially inept views of the world. The word “nigger” should not be seen as a racial slur, as the word “honky” does not offend me in the least. I have black friends and I openly call them nigger to their faces.

However, I find some black people quite intolerable as they have an enormous chip on the shoulder about thier ancestors being slaves. Think about it though, if they want an equal world, then they should not show preference to people of their own colour. Personally (deep down although I joke about it), I beleive we are all one flesh, and these toys are made for people who genuinely see the funny side of such things. Notice however, that there are no toys directed to offend white people, these toys were made by the man. The white man. Black people need to lighten up (in general, not all)and stop thinking that they are better than everybody else.

Sorry, I am rambling now, hope you know what I’m getting at here folks!

In the movie, Song of the South, Uncle Remus was shown to be a kindly old colored man, wise in his ways, but the paranoids didn’t like it, and it is hard to find a copy today. Uncle Remus was depicted as a really nice guy.
Then, you have the paranoids like Kevin who are afraid to look at history, and want to censor it , so that others may not know what happened before.
Showing other people history is how we learn, so it may not happen again. I don’t like it that Stalin and Mao killed about 90 million between them, but sometimes you have to look at it to see history, in those cases, evil personified.
    A Mercedes-Benz is racist?

You want racist? Support Spike Lee, White Boy.

  165. sir jorge says:

Number 8, as far as I can tell wasn’t intentional, but the media blitz over it made it notorious. I’m surprised there weren’t Mexican/American racist toys, as I can think of a few from my childhood that are really racist.

As for the rest of you, you will be coming back to earth many many times to learn what dip shits you really are :) bye bye now

  169. happybanyan says:

About 15-20 years ago we had “Darkie Toothpaste” in Taiwan. In Chinese it was literally “Black Man Tooth Paste”. I was 5 and never thought it was racist – my mom explained to me back then that everyone knew black people have really white teeth, so of course this name made sense. I’m still trying to find some to keep a bit of history, but I think it’s completely off the market now.

  170. highriverhick says:

I think like we’re being a bit sensitive and the pendulum has swung way too far. I look at black people and don’t consider the color of their skin, but their character in that there are just as many stupid blacks as there are stupid white folk. I’d love to have a golly wog around, but alas I’m just too niggardly to spend the money :) Lighten up – ooh, that’s probably racist too.

  171. woodmechanix says:

robertsons marmalade had a promo with goliwogs in the early or late 60′s. we had badges and ceramic goliwogs, when i was born my mother said i looked lie a golliwog, because of the cow licks. and i’m a white limey

  172. AJ says:

Three comments back described the “Darkie Toothpaste” which was also on sale in Indonesia at the time where I was working 16 years ago. Spotted the same toothpaste, now renamed “Darlie Toothpaste”, in Singapore 4 years ago – same picture on the box.

  173. fat boy says:

For many years I had a troll on my desk. You know, ugly looking creature with dayglo hair and skin the same colour as a white person. No one batted an eyelid. One night someone coloured him black with a permanent marker pen. Suddenly it was a racist micky-take. Ok for whites not ok for blacks – grow up! And as for golliwogs I had one for years it as a child – I never really made the connection between black people and golliwogs but I loved mine too bits.

  174. jesse says:

My first thought to some of these was: “No way”, “I can’t believe they actually put that on the market.”
, However on a second, and third scan of the images.. I am laughing hysterically. You gotta admit, some of them are pretty funny.

    :P

  175. American says:

First of all, if it’s against Jews it;s not racist, its prejudice.

Second, I was yelled at by someone at my local Chicago City College for say African American. She said she was an American that was black.

Toys depict what society deems worthy for children to play with. You take away the idea of racism and they are just toys that are either funny and/or entertaining.

I am not surprised at the Obama doll at all. Have you ever saw the T.V show “Boondocks”? If you haven’t, then you should. It’s hilarious and full of racism, oh and it’s also one of the most popular T.V shows in America for consumers 15-40. http://www.boondockstv.com/

The people who do not find racism funny, either pro or con, are who make racism an issue.

    Lighten up.

  176. Lilith says:

    That was nauseating…

  177. anonymous says:

eh, i dont know much because im young i guess, but although it may be racist to us new generation, doesn’t mean it was always. and also, the word “nigger” is taken very offensively yet many black people use it as slang, and i think it is humorous to think that just because your a different race, its racist. i have heard many racist things towards white people , and many toys that are also racist towards whites, yet they aren’t on the list??? and the hitler one isn’t racist lol. just giving a hitler toy to a kid is almost saying you don’t mind or you “idolize” what he did.

  178. escapist29 says:

When I first came on this page I was damn amused by the obscenity of these toys and more so by the outrageous discrimination (served with a slice of white indifference) displayed towards blacks at the time. I was damn amused.

Why did I start reading the responses? This 186 comment, aggravating, ignorant show-window is a disgrace to good ol’ fashion common sense, morality and human consciousness. I hope more persons do as I did and take the time to go through some of the responses left by you smart-asses. This may at least lead to an unprecedented 2% of future smart-asses digging their heads out of their asses and re-evaluating those quasi-smart comments they would have left 20 seconds later.

Exhibit A (essentially sums up the smartest dumbass comment a box can make):

I find some black people quite intolerable as they have an enormous chip on the shoulder about thier ancestors being slaves. Think about it though, if they want an equal world, then they should not show preference to people of their own colour. Personally (deep down although I joke about it), I beleive we are all one flesh, and these toys are made for people who genuinely see the funny side of such things. Black people need to lighten up (in general, not all)and stop thinking that they are better than everybody else.

The above extract is a prime example of a comment left by a douche. If you do not wish to unknowingly fall into this category you will 1) pay attention in history class 2) read and 3) shut the fuck up. This person has evidently never heard of a little thing called the transatlantic slave trade and the countless malicious acts taken out on the black man by, yes that’s right folks, the white man. If half of you morons did some reading and thinking every once in a while you would realize that certain issues are and will always be sensitive issues. For God’s sake lynching was still going on in the South less than half a century ago (that’s one hundred years divided by two = less than 50 years ago). So yes, I do think blacks have the right to be “quite intolerable”. You my friend, on the other hand, have no need for such conviction. Comic relief has its place, but when so many individuals continue to be so naive one can’t help but be GREATLY annoyed/disappointed.

  179. Create823 says:

the more were labeled..painted faces without makeup…becomes intelligent and productive…our lifestyle is..the black man and his family..proof..by a shadow of doubt…the past still remains prejudice..we must see pass all of this chronic poison..hatred…ignorance and live for what is..2 what continues to show themselves the victims…they wanna be like us…what’s the topic of their conversation…what made our people..their household juggaboo..becomes history…not an insult..what they would love to get our ghetto dandruff up….yes..it’s an insult..but..it also becomes HISTORY for the blackman ..woman…his children’s college degree of knowledge..feelme…just thought i mention..peace..CrEaTe.

  181. missjenn says:

Interesting slice of history. We can’t change the past no matter how much it may still hurt/offend/bother people.
I feel sorry for racists. They miss out on meeting some pretty damn amazing people from all colors of the rainbow.
Lighten up people. Let’s have a giant orgy lovefest and mix as many bloodlines we can just to piss off the racists.
Who’s in?! Haha…and monkey references aside, I would totally buy that Obama monkey. Love the man, love the animal!

  182. LOOPYGIGGLELIPS says:

Love them all, I have a golliwog now, it’s not racist it’s juat a doll that is black!

  183. Rebellious Scot says:

Okay, first thing to say my Mum had a Golliwog and she called him Jeffrey. She lived in Nottingham and never saw it as anything but a friend. The Obama monkey is racist until ya know the story. Monkey’s in Asia are respected and even worshipped, they weren’t insulting in fact they actually offering support. So apart from those two. They all seem pretty racist O_O. Just get the story before you claim it was racist. I support Obama, but the Monkey was a compliment. Just Western Civilization didn’t get. Look it up if ya wish.

  184. jason says:

  185. robbiedutch says:

why are most of you so political correct?i can’t see anything wrong with this stuff,it’s kinda funny hahaha(where can i buy Hitler’s limo?)greetz from Holland(the country) ;)

  186. Acme says:

I disagree with you totally. These images, or whatever you may call them, were made in a different time, a world away from where we are today. I don’t believe that some of them were made with any malice aforethought.

I think it’s a cheap shot at berating them. In fact you compound the issue by bring them to the fore.

  187. My mom is white and 77 years old. She was raised by her grandparents, who were born probably around 1875, when racism was rampant, and were country people, farmers. When she was little, they gave her a doll, which if you held it one way was a white baby, if you turned it the other, it was a black baby. They told her that they lived in a town where she might never meet a black person (who knows, at that time, they might have used the “n” word, but she doesn’t remember it), but that she needed to know there were all kinds of people, and that they were all just that – people. I’m still astounded by (and proud of) these forward thinking old folks. Wish I’d gotten a chance to meet them.

  188. Lucy says:

The Obama sock monkey is racist because it likening Obama to a monkey based on his african heritage. Back in the day people tried to scientifically prove that people of other races were gentically inferior to the white race by showing that they were less evolved and more like monkies than white people. If portraying President Bush as monkey was based on his racial heritage then it would in fact be racist, however, I think the portrayal is merely disrespectful not racist. The definition of racism is assigning a set of characteristics to someone based on their genetic heritage.

  189. davo says:

I want all of these. I’m white and therefore inherently racist.

  190. WTF??? says:

Geez…. Who cares??? We’re ALL racist, in our own way! You people act astonished at seeing such things, but really, what’s the shock? If you never knew that racism existed, you’d never care, but since you do know that it does, what surprises you? It’s everywhere, & in everything, but you’re appalled… really? So when a black person is angry at a white person, do you think he’d even hesitate to call him a “cracker” or a “honky” or just plain “white guy”? Well, that’s accepted, but God forbid, someone returns the explative, & calls him the “N” word (which I have to wonder, what the hell’s the big deal?), well then it’s war, ya? Nowadays, we’re supposed to call them “African Americans”, well, please, let’s just add yet another description for people, just to separate them, & they expect us to respect their feelings on this, well, that’s predjudice too!!! They ask us to treat them differently, then bitch because we do…WTF???

So how about the NAACP? Is that not racist? Is there an association for white persons? Not that I’ve heard about, & have you ever heard of the “white panthers”? How’s about the “United White Guy College fund”? Racism, it’s everywhere, & it’s turned into nothing but a big ass excuse for more & more problems…

Just one more personal (unasked for) opinion… Nothing gripes me more than when a “person of color” goes to spouting off to me about how MY ANCESTORS put their ancestors into slavery??? Really…? What kind of racial stereotyping is that??? ALL & I mean ALL of my ancestors came straight out of Germany, there’s no way that ANY of my family did any of that shit, but just ask a black person, they’ll tell you, it’s all my fault that their families were oppressed.

  191. Hairbear says:

You can still get those Greedy Nigger money boxes, brand new here in England, I bought some for my nieces last Christmas. They are called something different, but the same item. You twist the ear and he raises his hand to his lips with the coin, the eyes roll back to white and the coin disappears. Gruesome!

There’s a big market for the older toys, look for “Jim Crowe Memorabilia” online. Evidently affluent Afro-Americans are prominent collectors, people like Oprah Winfrey, some of it fetches big money because people have just destroyed it in embarrassment. How I wish I had those old copies of “Little Black Sambo” that were in my primary school.

You can find racism wherever you want to, I mean, we all know why they put cotton wool in the top of aspirin bottles, don’t we? (Er, OK, perhaps not, but it’s funny!)

  192. Hopeful American says:

I know that being white myself means that I would be treading on thin ice of racism. That ice is very thick for non-white people. I am also a male, so that makes me sexist. I’m also Christian, so that makes me, just like America’s founding fathers, a prime target for the ACLU.

–”Racism: thin-ice for Caucasians, solid ground for everyone else”

  193. Jaeyde says:

How are golliwogs racist? They were in the original Enid Blyton books about Noddy and Big Ears.. when they made Noddy into a tv series in the 90s they took out the golliwogs so as not to offend but didn’t take out Big Ears it seems to call someone big ears or even noddy is acceptable but to have black skinned toys that were not seen in a bad light in any way in the books is not. Golliwogs were akin to teddy bears, a loveable children’s toy. As a child I didn’t see it as a representation of a black person i actually thought it was some kind of clown, because of what i thought was a painted face like the white face paint on many clowns and the big smiles. I still believe that may have been the original intention, who says they are supposed to be black people? I liked my golliwog so much that I was delighted to see a shop selling nothing but golliwogs in the south of England a few years ago and bought one for my son, he still has it at 12. Also golliwogs were used as a logo for Robertson’s jam and as a child I collected the labels on the jam to get buttons depicting different golliwog characters. When recently it was said to be offensive I heard on a radio phone in show that if the golliwogs were offensive then so must the Homepride men, the logo from a brand of flour that showed white males in bowler hats. No one on the phone in could say why golliwogs were racist and Homepride guys not.

  194. Meiko says:

To all of the people who keep asking if it would be racist if the toys were white:

Yes it would be racist if the toys were white and manufactured by black people during a time when whites were thought of as inferior and were not allowed basic civil liberties. So if any poster can give me one instance where this is the case, then I will wholeheartedly agree with you.

That being said, I’m so tired of hearing the lame “only because it’s black people is it racist” crap. Face it. Slavery happened in the U.S. I don’t like it and neither do many of you. But it did. My own parents remember a time when they couldn’t even get on a bus without being hassled. But you know what? I try to get beyond that and look at the good in people. I don’t use race as a reason for everything, even in some instances when I’m probably justified in doing so. And most of my friends are the same way.

Oh and by the way, to many of you on this post – you don’t make yourself look less racist by referring to all black people as “they”. Just a hint.

  195. Jonathan says:

This list does not appear to be in any order, and I sincerely hope that people do not think that Golly Wogs are the most racist (being at Number 1 in the list) as next to the rest I think they look positively not racist at all. A doll is something that is given to be loved by a child, I had one myself and never thought anything of the colour, it was just a comforter to me. Golly Wogs are still manufactured and sold in all sorts of places including on the High Street, in my opinion they are no more racist than a black Barbie doll (which is not racist at all, and anyone who thinks it is has problems of their own!)

  196. Arkansas says:

Sure it was the norm then. But it doesn’t make it any more right now. Racism was wrong then, but it was far more common then as well. I do consider these to be antiques of the past but they certainly are not fun anymore.

  197. Mr T says:

    HEY

  198. Massa says:

These are great!!! Bring back the word NIGGER!!!

  199. Tartonkovski says:

Now I’m not racist, but I found some of these very hilarious just because they so openly display disapproval for whole races.

I’m surprised at all the people here saying they’re black and that they laughed anyway. They can really step up. I mean if someone made a doll making fun of my race, I’d just laugh too. So many people throw unnecessary fits.

  200. wolf says:

fuck all you ignorant bigot people.how do you sleep at night?half of you would give your child to meet your favorite african american sports hero but talk all your racist bull.you are cowards. scared of nothing.as bob marley said “untill the color of a mans skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes, ive got to say war” you make me sick bigot cowards

  201. alicia says:

Wow. I’m kinda flabbergasted. There are plenty of responses to this post that are blatantly racist, but one has to wonder, does the replier truly harbor those feelings, or are they just being sarcastic in a sick sort of way to goad the ire of others?

Personally, most of the toys on that list sicken me. Not in and of themselves, per se, but in that they remind me of the fact that humanity as a whole has yet to get over defining and degrading each other according to race (or sex, or religion, or nationality, or sexual orientation, or weight, et al…).

For years, American settlers treated the native Indians just as badly as they treated black slaves. During WW2, we had Japanese internment camps. After 9-11 and Bush’s middle east clusterfuck, everyone’s after anyone of middle eastern (or Indian, because apparently “they” look the same) descent. Before I get any responses about “well slavery lasted longer,” let me say this. It all happened. It sucks. Lets stop whining about whose discrimination was worse, or lasted longer, and lets start fixing it for christ’s sake! EVERY single group of people, according to some defining factor, has been discriminated against. Too bad it’s not in the history books of America (at least in most high schools, because the editors don’t want America to look bad).

WTF?!? Getting over it and having one big global “I’m sorry” hug is easier said than done. When we finally realize that there will probably always be those discriminatory jerks out there, we can start by trying our hardest to eliminate that behaviors that breed them in the first place.

Sorry for my long, semi-off topic rant, but it had to be said.

    Peace.

  202. Dave says:

Your definition of “racist” is missing from this article.

As an interesting exercise, try imagining each of these toys as including a Caucasian person instead of a black or Asian person and see if you still think it’s racist/offensive. If it is not offensive any more then it wasn’t to start with and it is only your own prejudice that makes it racist/offensive.

  203. I’ve got a Greedy Nigger Boy, never knew what the correct name for it was though. Thanks.

Do you think it would be worth anything?

This are just a few of the racist toys that exsited the Obama sock is one of many racist toys still being produced. In my collection I have three deragatory rapper dolls they all have big red lips.

One toy I would add to this list is Five Little Niggers the object of the game is to shoot down the five black boys to gain points. FYI: Slingshots were called nigger shooters at one time and that is what this game is based on.

  214. Ray says:

Oh me, oh my, I am shocked — shocked! — SHOCKED!!!

Thank goodness for the sainted, sanctimonious Thought Police, so that we don’t have any more toys (and more importantly, any more IDEAS) which are ‘RACIST’– in other words, insufficiently anti-white!

As for the endless stream of “kill whitey” and “Hate whitey” music, movies, magazines and books, “stupid whitey” cartoons, sitcoms, commercials… etc… etc … it’s not worth mention or comparison, though (it’s just FUNNY ENTERTAINMENT) since nothing antiWHITE (whether most subtly, or most virulently, hatefully, violently) can ever be ‘racist’ at all.

    — BTW, you can buy ”greedy nigger” piggy-banks all day long on ebay, any day. Most are reproductions currently made in China, though.

I see several of these “toys” aren’t from America.why is it that Americans are always portrayed as the most racist, looks like the whole world has problems with differences

  217. Like many says:

its funny how all these toys obviously insulted the blacks and were created by the whites, oh well, guess the white racist americans( not all whites are racist OKAY!??) gotta face the fact that OBAMA IS THE NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND HE’S BLACK. deal with it. the u.s.a is still the best , and no, im not black

  221. Pariah says:

Dear Bast people were ignorant! -_-

At least we’ve moved forward to the point where most people are as horrified by this stuff as they should be.

  222. rlo says:

I think maybe quite a few you people are overreacting. These toys are racist by todays standards but we need to look at them in historical context.

  223. Anda says:

human being, 25 years old…..should i say white too? the colour is so important? f… the colours! we are in the 3rd millenium, we have to evoluate into not saying people by their colour. I am from Romania ( Europe, for the ones that don’t know )..I like knowing abt the history of all people at least a little… And I would like to have all these toys for when I have a baby..to show them to him/her and tell their story…a lesson of history with “toys”, but not to play with them for sure no. I am sorry some persosn still feel offended by these “toys”..they shouldn’t be. Shame on those who are still racists! White people who hates blacks/reds/yellows etc…have black souls from all their hate towards other races. My father was a racist (he is dead for 15 years almost) ‘n I rmb as I was a little girl he told me not to dare being with a black, “even a gipsy is better” he would say, “else I am taking you to a monastery”…IRONIC, now I am with an Mauritian, (Indian origins so, a “black” :P ) and he is THE BEST N PERFECT N THE GENTLEMAN EVER!! I dont love him, I adore him n he deserves this…n I never cared/care when I see white folks looking weird to us or some stupid white men looking bad to him bcs he has me, a white woman…those are loosers and US, me and my baby “chocolate angel” as I call him, are the winners. We are happy and no one can take this away from us.

Short time on this earth etc. so lets see the rainbow, not the rain!!!!!!!

  225. Atilla says:

It amazes me how only liberal, white guilt, politically correct, products of public education can only see the bad in everything, I agree, some of these toys are offensive, but as other posters said, the Gollywag dolls are from a book series, with no rascist connotation, and when produced the dolls had no negative, even positive images of Africans. Hitler’s car is no different than a Kennedy limo form the 60s in America or Churchill or queen in England, he was the German Chancellor for 11 yrs. What would all you PC warriors say if the Mule bank was kicking a white person? Lighten up already. The Obama sock puppet is a political, not racial, statement. Funny how it is the liberals that need to have race included in everything, and a true conservative will really be color blind. Quotas, set asides, statistics, all race based to perpetuate the dependency class and decrease success (minority especially).

Hey guys, it’s cool to see the conversation still going after 6 months. Yay stumbleupon.com for leading me here.
I’m currently an english major, and I’m studying the ethical implications of children’s literature, and by extension, children’s toys. It’s interesting how toys groom children for adult life, and the toys in these pictures are yet another example of adults passing on their worldviews to their children. Yes, the general population didn’t see any problem with these products, but that doesn’t alleviate that issue – this worldview is anti-humanist – and thankfully is in decline (though not completely absolved. i live in texas and the town i grew up in still had high schoolers who were basically groomed for the KKK.)
On another note, are we not doing the same thing to our girls? (ok, not the exact same thing, but passing on our worldviews through toys?) Here’s a doll little girl, see your future? You are here to produce and nurture. Here little boy, enjoy your combat action figures. You are here to dominate and destroy. I know that everyone will not agree with me on this one, but I think it’s good that these issues are being addressed in an open forum.
Oh, by the way, for the record, it’s spelled ridiculous (not rediculous). Sorry, that makes me crazy. Thanks!

  228. Lloyd says:

Why is it that all these “toys” are considered racist? They are just plain “funny”, it makes no difference who you are. It is no different than a Caucasian being shown as afraid while going through a Negro neighborhood, or being depicted as a “buck-toothed, beer-drinking, redneck. And all Negros I know have no problem calling me “Cracker”, “Whitey” or “Rabbit”, yet it is perfectly acceptable. So I say, “Let Blackie and the Blackie-Lovers whine and go ahead and have fun with the toys”. Racism is not a “One-Way” street.

Toys dont make kids racist. People do. When the spics steal bikes and toys right out of our yard that is what my kids learn about them. When the spics form lines at the welfare office and saturate all the food banks. Thats what my kids learn about. When all the spic neighborhoods look like trashed out mexico and all the white neighborhoods still look like new, my kids see that for themselves. It has nothing to do with their race. It has to do with the way they live. Its what they do, not what they are.

These toys are historic relics, black people are largely seen as equal in main stream society, we’re a generation past racial inequality – I’m black and I find that I don’t see colour, even when something bad happens to me, i just see bad people. The only way we’ll make progress in society is if we work together for a collective intellectual good. Racism should be a word that doesn’t exist, emphasising anti racism to the maximum extend just keeps it alive, i for one think black comedians are a huge driving force behind racial chips on shoulders.

I don’t know how anyone can think that their race is better than the next persons’. If I remember right, the good book stated that God created man in his image. He didn’t say that he was of any particular color either. God can be any color. Let’s put this B/S aside permanently and focus on more important things like how we can make our planet a better place to live for our kids and what we can do to better ourselves. Let’s look at how and what we can do to help each other and not ways to bring each other down. Just something to think about.

I used to have a ‘Greedy Nigger Boy’ money box and I didn’t turn out racist!

That is not to say I approve of such toys, but I do wish I still had it, because they are worth a fortune now.

  251. Golliwog was the first black doll to hit the otherwise white-only doll shelves, it brought diversity and also he was portrayed by his creator Ms, Upton as a jovial and gallant hero (he also appears in Alan Moore’s LoEG:Black Dossier as a hero), he is not racist, but a breakthrough.
It is as if you said that Uhura in the original Star Trek was racist because she was the ship’s receptionist.

  252. not_everything_black_is_racist says:

What part of that Obama doll is racist? Last time I checked, Obama was indeed black. If someone made Bush-monkey doll, no one would say that there is anything wrong with that.

As stupid as being racist is, it is equally stupid to say that every product that has, or doesn’t have black people in them, is racist.

  253. Wankle Bonker says:

  256. Audrey says:

The list is unbelievable enough… then you read the comments. Sheesh. All of these toys are NOW inappropriate regardless of how “breakthrough” they were way back when. The fact that the Gollywog was the only black doll on the shelves and it doesn’t even look like an Afircan-American is sad. It’s about misrepresenting people of color (or any ethnicity for that matter, I’m sure there are stereotypes about white people that they don’t appreciate), and acting as though it is acceptable. Thanks for the list.

  257. Chuckles says:

None of these toys are racists. Check out a dictionary if you are unsure. Is my Action Man racists just because its a white man?
Whoever posted this page is a twatting shit stirrer.

  258. Unknoqn says:

Yeah, alright. So what your saying is, that when white people are racist, it’s not cool, but when any other color other then white is racist, it’s just fine and dandy?

I think that makes you more hypochrites than anyone.

  259. The_Juggler says:

I cant see anything racist with these toys. Just because they feature black people doesn’t make them racist. As for the names, they’re just from what was right at the time, again not racist.

  260. Loomis says:

You can still buy Golliwogs in the UK except that the Politically Correct assholes now say that you have to call then Gollys instead of their real name of golliwogs.
They were called Golliwogs long before Golliwog became an offensive word, so they should still be called Golliwogs.

  263. Woah says:

A – I promise these toys are racist. P r o m i s e. To say they “feature” people of color is like saying that the taco bell dog “features” mexican attributes.
B – Man, this shit is fucked up.
C – it’s not that simple with racism (OH WHITE PEOPLE ARE RACIST BUT OTHER PEOPLE ARENT AARRHH) and you know it.

It seems more like certain folks get frightened at the thought of the currently-in-place racist system being challenged.

  264. Woah says:

    Also,
How the HELL is the “greedy nigger boy” and “nigger makeup” not racist?!! What planet do you live on?!

  265. Jefferson Davis says:

I don’t see why the Obama sock puppet is racist. People used to draw George W. Bush as a monkey all the time because, well, he kinda looked like a monkey. Obama has just as big of ears, so what’s the problem? Why is it racist when it’s Obama, and not racist when it’s Bush?

  266. Scott Aldridge says:

I understand some of these, but seriously, just because something is black doesn’t mean it is racist. That’s like someone saying that just because something is white it is racist. I mean, you can’t even sing nursery rhyme without them being racist. And people seem to forget that judging someone because they have white skin is equally racist. I mean, I said the colour black in an art lesson and someone said, “oh you racist.” I mean, WTF?

“Racist toys are not just the play things of our grandparents. This monkey sock puppet of American Presidential hopeful “Barack Obama” was only released last month! (thankfully it’s no longer available for sale)”

Oh please! Obama is a mindless puppet in a suit. It fits him perfectly whether people like you agree or not. He was only voted for president because everyone who disagreed with him was being labeled a racist, because he was the first black guy ever to run for president. Get over it. Making him president was a huge mistake and everyone who voted for him will see that in the end.

  271. think says:

last i checked the mascot of a major college is the ‘Fighting Irish’, that is racist against Irish folks, but thats ok, because if yer making generalizations/stereotypes of someone who cant get a tan it cant possibly be racist.

  274. Anti-Racism says:

I thought these were supposed to be racist.

  275. David says:

Yeah – some of these are a bit disturbing, but at the same time a lot of these comments seem to be rather loosing touch with reality a bit. I always rather liked the gollywog – though i never owned one. It looks a quirky and rather likable character – it would never occur to me that it could be offensive in itself (as opposed to people using it in a negative way, as people do everything). One might as well accuse Micky Mouse of being ‘mousist’ because he is such a stylized and unreal mouse. Or Barby dolls anyone? Or the Aunt Sally doll or GI Joe? Racism must be one of the most odious and brain-dead things humans have – but it seems to me that it does a dis-service to real racism when arguments on the subject get so silly and when some people desperately look for the negative ways of looking at even the most harmless things.

  276. Tom says:

Obama wasn’t the first black guy to run for president, only the first selected as president.

I could also swear that someone did indeed make a Bush sock monkey. Of course since it was Bush it was OK and they probably got a .gov grant to fund it. The only difference was the color. Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, technically the OSM can only be HALF-racist if one holds to the liberal definition that racism against whites isn’t racism at all.

  277. Kokmasta says:

To all the people who took this seriously and whined about this post: chill out. It was meant to be for comedic purposes. If you take offense to “nigger” jokes, then don’t click on the link that says, “Ten of the most racist toys ever made.” Dumbasses.

  278. Jay says:

    Hey Marebear,

TheSock Obama is available and has been for over a year. It would serve you well to know what your talking about or do you always just spout off without checking your facts?

  279. Light says:

People who have never had to endure any type of racial discrimination cannot possibly fathom what it’s like. By racial discrimination, im not only speaking of racism towards Blacks, but also Hispanics, Whites, Asians, and last but definitely not least, Native Americans (who are so often brushed under the rug and pushed to the side as if they are a dirty little secret). Racism is defined as:
the prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races..
That means that if ANY person of ANY race considers their race to be superior to others, they are racist. In my opinion, most white people, who make up the majority of the American population, cannot truly understand what it means to encounter racism on a day-to-day basis. While some may hear the occassional “all white people are good for is….” or “white people are so [insert negative attribute here],” they do not experience the inundation of negativity towards their race that minorities feel from many outlets, the most powerful being the media. Although America has made great strides towards equality, not just for race, but gender and religion as well, hundreds of years of racism and a feeling of entitled superiority die hard. To those who say that MANY people overreact to the slightest racial insensitivies or to those who say that SOME people are just waiting for a sob story hoping to sue and make a quick buck, i say you are absolutely correct. However, those who have not lived through the daily racial injustice that is the reality for many non-whites will never understand how truly racist this country actually is. Is this country’s ingraned racism an excuse to succumb to low expectations? Absolutely not! But those of you who are not minorities do not realize that although our constitution declares all men equal, a solid 80+% of Americans do not.

6 reasons why racism is unimportant
    1. racism is everywhere between any and all races
    2. it always has been
    3. it always will be
    4. no one is openly racist unless theyre with a group or on the internet so you honestly cannot tell who is racist 90% of the time
    5. there are more important things out there than “these people dont like me”
    6. be happy people are using you and your race in a stereotypical way to make themselves feel better, you are impacting their lives without even having to say anything to them or about them so your being is important and significant

grow up and leave the petty, childish things to the petty, childish simpletons

  282. RainCookie says:

these toys aren’t really racist, but the ones including the words “nigger” are terribly offending. i am not racist at all but why is it whenever a toy including a black man or women racist, the only reason i do see is because of what the toys meaning was , like the offending “greedy nigger” toy. I hate racisim. what is most annoying is that ever time a toy of a black person apears, it is soon wiped off the shelfs

  284. Kate says:

I think a lot of you people have lost touch with reality.LOL

ALL of these toys are offensive AND racist. This has nothing to do with “political correctness.”
There are people in the UK who are of darker skin: African descent, Asian and middle eastern who are called “wog” or “golliwog” everyday because of their skin color.
Not to mention the fact that I’ve never seen an African American or any black person for that matter look like any of these toys. Most of these toys are a caricature of , dare I say it: A Black Minstrel Show!! The Asian spectacles are phucked up!

Common SENSE ALERT: Any toy featuring “black face,” meaning “fire engine red lips,” “Charcoal face paint,” and wild straw hair is “Jim Crow racist!”

Btw, blacks have been called monkeys since the beginning of slavery, so therefore the Obama toy IS racist.

  285. Jay says:

    Kate,
Lets see here…there are only two schools of thought when it comes to our origins. We either were created by God or we ALL evolved from primates. Take your pick. If you belive we were created then we were ALL created equal. If you belive we evolved then we are ALL equal. Just because people poke fun at other people doesn’t make them racist. People like you cry and whine for tolerance but have none of your own. TheSock Obama is funny because Obama looks like a sock monkey. Whos’ fault is that? God or the monkeys?

  286. J says:

Racism in today’s day and age is isolated. It’s surely there, but being racist is a social bullet to the head… unless you want to hang out with other racists… then you’re on your own you fucking redneck! The perception that it’s still ‘everywhere’ is fueled by the media’s constant eagerness to jump on any instance they can and shove it in everyone’s faces. It’s not healthy for ANYONE, and it’s for sure not good for our country as a whole. And people say it’s ‘ok’ to make fun of white people or the fighting Irish or whatever they’re talking about because IT IS! I could care less if they say I can’t dance. I could care less if someone cracks stupid ass jokes about me. I’m not worried about it. I think the TRUE RACISM in this country is the sad sad SAD lack of clever white people jokes. I could rattle off jokes about blacks, indians, jews, retards and even WOMEN! but white guy jokes? eh…
With that said, there’s nothing racist about hating all these fucking loser gangsta wannabe black kids in the suburbs listening to shitty rap music… as long as you hate the white kids who do it too!;-) USE PROPER GRAMMER!!!
And these toys are so racist it’s hilarious… except the Obama one. If you don’t like it then don’t buy it. Ask Obama what he thinks. He probably has two. Oh wait, you don’t care what he thinks. You just wanna feel superior to everyone else by spouting half-assed moral rhetoric about how inappropriate it is. YOU ROCK!

  287. Zavian says:

I cant believe how stupid people are. Its funny what people choose to forget. How is the Obama monkey racist but the George Bush one not? Well in case you have forgotten black people have been referred to as monkeys from the slavery era. Thats the f*****g difference. And whoever posted they hate n*****s can suck their fat f*****g mother and die. Pricks!

  288. Jay says:

    Sorry Zavian,
Some of us will not put up with the double standard that you hide behind. To say that it is ok for a Bush monkey and not an Obama monkey makes you the racist! BTW
anglos were called monkeys by the Japanese and were enslaved by the islamics for over 200 years (in case you forgot or didn’t know) So why don’t we see the anglos boo whoing? Because we are not stupid enough to get caught in that trap!

  289. katherine says:

i find this very pathetic and unbelievable. i didn’t know racism had it that bad,but of course white people will always run racism in their family and make us look like a circle. i’m suprised that if a white or a korean person calls us”nigger” its reffered as racist but if a black person calls a white person a”cracker” then that’s okay? everything negative coming from a white person’s mouth about black people is reffered racist!

From looking at these G*d forsaken “toys” and some of the comments here, it is clear that so-called “White” people have a very long way to go to accepting a post-racial society. You wonder why we “flood” your countries with millions of People of Color every year? Look no further than these child race-hate brainwashing devices. Maybe in 200 years when you are all mixed race yourselves, you will then learn that it is wrong to hate on other races of people.
